Sampson ordeal hurt Gordon

The departure of coach Kelvin Sampson under an NCAA cloud rocked Eric Gordon especially hard. Gordon's shooting percentage has fallen from 46.6 percent to 34.5 since Sampson took a buyout. When much of the team staged a walkout to support Sampson, Gordon attended practice. He said that caused some friction among teammates, but the divide only lasted a day. Gordon, who averages 21.3 points per game, said he has not decided whether he will leave Indiana for the NBA yet. Most expect him to move on, making life more difficult for Indiana, which may have a new coach and also loses senior D.J. White. NBA scouts predict Gordon will be among the top four picks in this year's draft.

Who cares? This kid is one year and done anyway.

March 21, 2008  09:16 AM ET

hes going into the draft,it doesnt hurt him that bad

March 21, 2008  09:25 AM ET

That wrist injury has nothing at all to do with a declining shooting percentage, it's all attributable to Sampson?

Excuse me, I have a call coming in.

March 21, 2008  09:25 AM ET

DIdn't they know this when he arrived at IU?

March 21, 2008  10:52 AM ET

why should Indiana be exempt from the media-hyped 'one and done' movement from college to NBA? college athletes, especially those receiving scholarships, should be required to sign contracts specifying academic effort and graduation. let the NBA and NFL operate their own minor league systems, like baseball does.

If he didn't want to be around a crooked coach who was just asking to be canned, he should have stuck to his commitment to play at Illinois

March 21, 2008  11:46 AM ET

He backed out of his committment to Illinois, then he is so devastated by his coach's poor ethics that he can't shoot straight?? Give me a break. He was on his way to the NBA anyway.

Gordon will SUFFER in the Association

March 21, 2008  02:00 PM ET

It was him. I tried telling him that while I have eligibility, I'm almost 40 and way out of shape. He apologized and said he's trying to get help.

He should have remained committed to Illinois, just as I have remained committed to my husband!

March 21, 2008  11:31 PM ET

Good one, Billary!

March 22, 2008  07:18 AM ET

Your husband should be committed.

Chi Bo your comment is typical of Illinois fans. Gordon changed his mind get over it. How was the NIT? Oh, yeah you didnt get an invite.

March 22, 2008  01:16 PM ET

This is called Just Desserts.......getting what you deserve, whatever you want to call it. Indiana got what it deserved for hiring an unethical sleazeball that they knew had issues....and Gordon got what he deserved for bailing on Illinois and committing to play for a loser like Sampson.

HoosiersFan - IU fans would be the loudest complainers if someone had done the same thing to them......why would you defend reprehesible actions like what Sampson did, just because it benefited Indiana. Oh, and I'll put Illinois record this decade up against Indiana's anytime, even if we had a down year.

FInally, the best part of the tournament so far was seeing Gordon go 3-15 and watching IU get bounced out in the first round by a mediocre Arkansas team.

March 22, 2008  04:15 PM ET

How many basketball titles does Illinois have?

March 22, 2008  04:26 PM ET

I assume that is addressed to me, and the answer is of course, zero. I wasn't making a comparison between the programs, I was just pointing out that Illinois has been more successful than Indiana during this decade, and my primary point stil is that Indiana got what they deserved by hiring a sleazeball like Kelvin Sampson in the first place. You hire somebody with that many red flags and doubts about his ethics and integrity......you deserve to get burned the way Indiana did.
