Garrard, Jags talking new deal

The agent for quarterback David Garrard said he hopes to reach a deal with the Jaguars in the next few days but left open the possibility the two sides won't agree on a new contract this year. If the two sides can't agree, Garrard would play out the final year of his current contract at just under $2 million and then become a free agent. The Jaguars would then have the option of slapping the franchise tag on him, which costs $10.7 million this year and will likely go up.

The Jaguars will get this guy signed. He has earned it and he is a Good top 10 QB in the NFL. Good luck and I hope the Jags do good this season.

He's going to be 30 years old...this could be a good or bad thing for the Jaguars depending on how long the deal is and how long Garrard can play at a high level.

Garrard be so over rated...the guy has an amazing O-line, a great running game where teams stack 9 guys in the box to stop midget man Jones-Drew and the old man Taylor and this guy generates attention with the Jags passing game as Betty White would doing a strip tease.

David Garrard is the "black" Neil O'Donnell....average QB with a goodline and great D and running game...see Super Bowl XXX

Humpty: You got a point there.

March 21, 2008  09:13 AM ET

If it wasn't for Jones-Drew and Taylor, I am not sure if Garrard is that good. He's a game manager that needs a lot of things to be in his favor in order for him to be successful.

Pay him to keep the team chemistry, but don't pay him Peyton Manning money.

Funny ... trent Dilfer has won more SuperBowls than Dan Marino

March 21, 2008  01:03 PM ET

Good, I like the Jaguars, besides the fact they beat my team TWICE at HOME! Garrard is a good quarterback...

March 21, 2008  01:24 PM ET

Sign him - this is a no-brainer.

March 21, 2008  01:25 PM ET

He fits perfectly into Del Rio's system but they signed Lemon for $3 million/year for 3 years as the backup which gives them another option in case there are snags in the negotiations. Current contract rumors are $14.5 million in guarnteed money and $26-$28 million depending on who you listen to. And yes they can franchise him next year but I think he wants to sign. I wish they would have spent some money on the WR corps because I am not hollering "Super Bowl Champs" with Porter, Northcutt, Willams and "We have nothing to lose by trading for him" Troy Williamson. Matt Jones is ok but he's in the dog house here. Run the ball and have a strong defense is the Del Rio way. Passing is secondary.

The more I think about it, the more I think that the Jags are just a marquee player or two away from being a great team.

March 21, 2008  02:10 PM ET

Gerrard is pretty good and he proved that he can make good decisions with the ball. Why not sign him for another 5 yrs?

I honestly think that the Jags should wait til after the 08 season to give this guy a new deal. He might have just been a one year wonder. His numbers will go up because they have added some more offensive weapons. Don't do it yet ... make him wait till after this season.
