Grant wants sweet Packers deal

Ryan Grant will work with the Green Bay Packers in the offseason without a contract, but to get him to training camp the Packers will have to sign him to a contract well above the NFL minimum for a second-year pro. His agent, Alan Herman, said Grant will take part in all the team's minicamps and workouts this spring, but that he will not sign the $370,000 minimum tender for an exclusive-rights player who has only one accrued season in the NFL. Grant is looking for a longer, far more lucrative deal after he rushed for 956 yards and averaged 5.1 yards a carry despite being the team's primary halfback for only the final nine games of the season. Herman said he's talked to Packers officials about a contract, but that they haven't begun negotiating.

Grant should get paid more, but if he doesnt, the packers got a steal

I agree Badger...with teams gearin to stopspread-west-coast offense and Old man Favret hrowin to speedy receivers Grant was free to roam. Look like Barry Foster all over again

I say sign him to a multi-year deal, just back-load the contract in the later years so that if it doesn't work, there is minimal pains of cutting him.

That said though, I'd love for him to continue to produce like he did last year.

He is asking a lot for a guy who was not good enough to beat out Bradshaw, Ward or Jacobs with the Giants and has managed to stay healthy for only one of his four years in the league.. The Packers have all the cards here and he has none..Nine games is not exactly much to judge a RB by.

Football talk - "how "sweet" it is' !!!

March 21, 2008  11:25 AM ET

Based upon how Green Bay typically operates, they will likely give him a back loaded 4-year deal with only an average $1M-$2M payday in 08. But they'll also include a multi-million $ roster bonus if they elect to retain him after the 08 season. That way he earns a big payday, and the Packers get another year to evaluate before investing too much $ in him.

You do realize that he did beat Bradshaw & Ward in rushing yards this year and almost surpassed Jacobs. What Grant did in essentially 9 or (arguably) 10 games (though he's listed as playing in 15 games but really only started 8-10 of them) was pretty impressive.

And maybe its not so much that he couldn't beat out Bradshaw, Ward, or Jacobs, but was never given the opportunity to? Who knows, but the Giants had some depth at RB and maybe just never gave Grant the chance

If anybody in GB deserves a raise it is Grant. Give him a small percentage
of the money gained by Favre retiring.

March 21, 2008  12:07 PM ET

Ryan Grant should hold out if the Pack don't pay him. The Packers wouldn't hesitate for a second to cut him or renegotiate his contract, if they thought he wasn't performing up to their expectations, so he needs to do what he can to make as much as he can while he is performing at a high level. Make hay while the sun is shining.

I think the Packers got about a bit over $10 in cap space with Favre retiring (he hasn't filed the papers to clear the cap space yet but soon probably). Even if the Packers gave Grant a raise of 2% of Favre's cleared cap salary, that's a $200,000 raise.

March 21, 2008  12:55 PM ET

Ha! The only reason he was productive is because teams feared their passing game.

March 21, 2008  01:01 PM ET

Too bad he couldn't run the ball in a big game against NY, hey maybe they would've won that game and Farve coulda gone out on top, but then again why would anyone want that... Oh yeah, probably EVERYONE in Wis.

Good job Grant you do deserve to get reawrded by joking in the NFC Championship

choking*

March 21, 2008  01:07 PM ET

I think he proves that he deserves a big contract... I mean, since Ahmad Green, they have had NO luck with running backs, except Grant, who jump started the running game, which in turn helped spread out the offense and not make Favre throw every down, which is one of the main reasons they made it a good season and deep into the playoffs... I'd say something along the lines of a 4 year contract worth maybe 25 million... Not too much, but good enough to keep him happy... Not the contract a running back like L.T. would accept, but it is a contract that says we want you here and you will earn more in the future if your success persists...

Beware the one-big-year guys who demand big money... can you say Bubba Franks? Javon Walker? KGB?
Also, like others have pointed out, this season will be much tougher sledding for Grant with Rodgers back there instead of Favre. Please don't try to convince me otherwise....
And where was he during the champ game?

March 21, 2008  01:35 PM ET

PackBrew42 is Bucky Badger NMI ...I realize those things. Ward, Jacobs and Bradshaw shared, noe were featured backs for nine weeks. Grant was not better than Ward or Bradshaw with the Giants, they did not want to let him go, but had no place for him, and most of all- he had a history of always being hurt. It was a good deal for Grant and the Packers, they had nothing at that spot, but Grant has to show he can play a full year, and he has NEVER shown that yet...They will give him more money, but not top RB money. He has not earned it yet..You can believe the Packers will draft a RB in the first3 rounds. No way do you enter a season with Grant as your one and only..

Vikings fans would know about choking...Gary (or was it Morten) Andersen...your flawless kicker all season choking in the NFC Championship game against Atlanta on a 30-40 yard field goal indoors in 1998.

Choking in the NFC Championship game in sub-zero temperatures against a much better defense (than Atlanta's in 1998) seems alot less like a choke job compared to a kicker flawless all year that misses a relative chip shot (in his book) in an enclosed stadium.

And considering the Vikes haven't won the NFC North since 2000, they should do like the Lions fans do and shut their trap.

Kilda | 03/21/08, 01:35 PM

You got a point with Franks...

Javon Walker was never signed beyond his rookie contract...get a clue next time.

KGB - His production slackened for about two years after signing the new contract, but you do realize that he had 9.5 sacks last year (after getting 8 and 6 in 2005 & 2006 when he was used as essentially an every down back) right?

50yearfan | 03/21/08, 01:35 PM

Ummm, they drafted a RB in the 2nd round last year (Brandon Jackson)

They enter this year with: Ryan Grant, Brandon Jackson, DeShawn Wyne, Vernand Morency, and Noah Herron on the roster. Somehow with 4 guys on the roster, I don't see them burning another pick in the first 3 rounds on ANOTHER RB.

That's all fine and dandy but he still owes the Pack money from the play-off game against the Giants.
