Wolverines eye future QBs

Michigan has extended Kevin Newsome out of Chesapeake, Va. an offer. Tate Forcier is another one out of San Diego. He's got a great arm and can make plays with his feet. It looks like he would be an ideal guy to run Rich Rodriguez's system. Same with Newsome. Newsome has a great arm as well, and he's one of the top hurdlers in the country.

Yes it takes a year or two to rebuild, but UM will be fine. To be honest, I think we will be a better team without the distraction of the QB. Let R-Rod establish his system, then bring in his kind of guys. TP would have been a distraction. Look what happened to ND... I don't want that in UM. I think that someone will emerge an unlikely star by the end of the season, setting up a healthy competition with some of these new recruits for next years starting position.

March 23, 2008  11:32 AM ET

Lets have a reality check. Coach Rodriguez is rebuilding a program previously run by a great man, and (of late) a questionable coach (Sorry Lloyd and it hurts (all of us.) There will be unabided enthusiasm and something like a #7 seven national ranking after the first five games. And then comes an 'unplanned' midseason loss, and the Rose Bowl hype of the once-defeated Wolverines and Buckeyes. Unfortunately the 2008 game is in Columbus and there is the matter of the coach that has the Wolverine's number. But....come 2009. This is the reality of 2008 - nothing wrong with playing in Orlando on the New Year.

A Patient Wolverine - our day will come.

Will Tate Forcier go to Michigan? Remember his brother transferred out to go to Stanford.

I have seen clips of Newsome. However, he is a good hurdler and he might want to go to a school with a better track program. I think that kid stays in the A.C.C.

SORRY MICHIGAN, WHILE YOU REBUILD WE ARE RELOADING........ OHIO STATE FOREVER LOYAL FOREVER ROYAL............. MICHIGAN SUCKS

March 23, 2008  12:36 PM ET

Blue chip players are given that moniker through HS press and recruiting. Some pan out, some don't (see Jimmy Clausen). Just because UM doesn't have a media darling to run the O, they are not up the Au Sable without a paddle.

have fun losing to ohio state rich.let's go mountaineers

March 23, 2008  12:56 PM ET

My-my: All this OSU talk (seems that some humility would have resulted from the last two OSU BCS strategies (score first and lose by 100.) I know, I know, it's better to suffer abject humility at the BCS; then to never go dancing. Move over darling; Sheriff Rich is in town.

March 23, 2008  01:07 PM ET

The frustrating thing is that Jason Forcier would have been a lock as the starter. But then again, no one knew that RR would come to UM and that UM would switch to the spread O. OSU fans should worry less about Michigan, whom they believe they own, and worry about why they can't seem to play well in big bowl games when the NC is on the line. Maybe it's just that OSU is only good to beat UM but destined to choke afterwards.

March 23, 2008  01:31 PM ET

My take: OSU got straight outplayed by Florida and should have competed better. But OSU should have never been in last years national title game. OU, USC, WVU, Mizzou, Oregon; all of these teams choked in some way and let us into the game. LSU should have won that home game.

Anyway, I think michigan would have to worry less about a qb if they weren't running the spread. We did just fine with a lack luster Krenzel, a michigander himself. The spread relies so much on the skills of the qb, so if these guys aren't up to the task, Michigan will struggle for a while.

March 23, 2008  01:34 PM ET

Did Ohio State win the previous two National Championships and I missed it? The way OSU fans talk I find it hard to believe they were a COMPLETE embarrassment to the conference and their state. I guess the Columbus ABC television affiliate must have blacked out on 1-1-08 for the three hours that UM beat the team that embarrassed the Bucks only 12 months earlier.

4vrRoyal.......There is this key on the key board that lets you type w/o EVERYTHING BEING IN CAPS. Try it. You might not come off sounding like such an idiot. I have a friend who is a Buckeye fan who told me about this great three-way sex he had last week. He said his mother and sister were great that night.

BuckeyePride...You posted as I was writing. I could not agree more with your post and I was referring to THE GUY THAT SCREAMS EVERYTHING (4vrRoyal......)

March 23, 2008  02:10 PM ET

Buckeyepride,

Yep, you are right about the spread and the role of the QB. UM will struggle unless a miracle happens and Threet (the assumed starter at this point) grasps things quickly.

It will be a very interesting season to watch.

March 23, 2008  02:23 PM ET

We had a good QB untell that SOB ran him off.

March 23, 2008  02:39 PM ET

Thunderdragon,

Unfortunately you don't exactly know what you are writing about. The only one that ran Mallett out of A2 was Ryan Mallett. Forgetting the fact that RR explained to Ryan on 3 different occasions that he could prosper in his offense, Ryan had it in his mind that he was going to leave. See, Ryan had the option of staying through Spring practice to feel the system out and still have the opportunity to transfer. He opted not to do that. So, let's be honest here. Mallett wanted to leave before even seeing how he's fit into RR's offense. Mallett has only himself to blame for leaving the team.

its amazing to me that um fans point out the bucks 2 yr skid in the nc game...if i remeber correctly your team got waxed by usc in the rose bowl, then loss 2 straight home games to appy state and oregon(although i think both were quality teams) but you still have the nerver to point out buckeye flaws....hhmmm thats weird to me...with that said i think um will be fine as long as they dont put to much pressure on a qb to revive their program...you guys have to remember um is located in a fertile area for for top notch recruits..ohio,pennsylvania,michigan,illinois are all great prep states and rr still has contacts in florida's prep scene so you should be fine....GO BUCKS AND CINCY!!!!

March 23, 2008  05:32 PM ET

It is amazing how much people worry about and criticize a program with a new coach that hasn't even had the chance to show what he can do. Everyone needs to realize that UM is going to be in a major rebuilding year this year (and perhaps next year). I don't think any UM fan has anything to worry about at this point, give RR a couple of years to see what he can actually do. I am sure that they will be back to a serious B10 contender in no time if RR is the type of coach that he appeared to be in WV. Besides, you never know what a program is capable of in a "rebuilding year." I think most people considered OSU to be in a rebuilding year last year (although not as extensive as UM this year) and look at what they were able to do.

With that said, you UM fans can say whatever you want about OSU chocking in the big game, but how long has it been since you have beaten the Buckeyes? I guess that we aren't the only ones that have chocked in a big game. Don't forget that at least we have won a championship in the last few years, have you?

KS, which do you believe was more of an embarrassment losing in two straight national championship games against two great teams or losing at home to Appalachian state? Lets face it, both OSU and UM have had great days and terrible days lately. Both teams will get past their problems and return to glory.

Let's Go Buckeyes!!!

March 23, 2008  05:46 PM ET

Forcier, give me some help here! Michigan's transfered QB to Harbaugh sibling?

March 23, 2008  05:48 PM ET

Haven't beat the "bucknuts" lately, no. But hey, remember someone named Cooper? What was his record again?

March 23, 2008  05:49 PM ET

Against Michigan Record that is.

March 23, 2008  05:52 PM ET

Ooohh Airborne, the *C* word is a sore subject amongst the buckeye faithful. Done any time in the 173rd?
