Revamped Leafs may include Carter
Maple Leafs interim general manager Cliff Fletcher has said the team that skates on to the ice for the season opener next October will look rather different than the one fighting for its playoff lives today. Whether the Leafs can pick up some integral pieces in free agency beginning July 1 remains to be seen, but the class of free agents this summer will not be as strong as it was in 2007. There remains talk that one restricted free agent who could get an offer sheet is Flyers winger Jeff Carter, who would have been a Leaf had Tomas Kaberle waived his no-trade clause last month.

Sorry Cliff, this guy will not be leaving Philly. Mike Richards and Jeff Carter have always been integral parts of the future. Jeff Carter has proved he's valuable after the trade deadline wore off, especially in his streaky periods where he nails a goal or two per game. The Flyers won't let this happen. No chance. Toronto had their chance at Carter and I can bet you Homer is happy he didn't part with Carter now. True, adding Kaberle would have been huge, but Carter has kept the Flyers in the running. The Flyers will cut fat in the off season where necessary, but it won't be Carter.

Honestly, this has to one of the dumbest articles i've seen .. there is NO WAY homer would let him go for ANYTHING! Homer said that almost all of the trade offers somehow involved Carter and that he wasn't letting him go, even for a trade, so why would he let him go for free agency ! Use your brains!

Grlzpoop2> Did you miss the trade deadline? He was gone, Kaberle killed it not Homer.
The article says the Leafs will make him an offer sheet. Will Homer match it and will it cost him?
The Leafs are serious about making changes next year and will be targeting good young players.

Oh, i was under the impression that Homer wouldn't take the trade, yeaa, idk where my mind was! To be honest, i think Homer will try really hard to keep him here, considering what Carter did, when Richards was out!

While I expect the Leafs to make some changes this off-season, they are seriously hampered by the fact that they have the majority of the team under contract...and not many teams out there are overly interested in what they have to offer. So signings will be their way out of this problem, but Philly will lock up Carter before July 1, I would think. Once again, look at the paper involved with the story. Tomorrow, the Sun will be reporting that the Leafs are going to lure Lecavalier out of Tampa, or that a trade has been arranged, with the Leafs trading Raycroft to Detroit for Ken Holland and Lidstrom...

I honestly don't see the Leafs targeting any RFA's. They are already behind the 8-ball when it comes to the draft, so poaching off all of your picks so you can sign one player to a ridiculous contract is not in their best interest I bet...

There will be more than the Leafs after Carter. He will definitely get offered huge money. A lot of teams remember the Bob Clarke attempt at Ryan Kesler a few years ago in Vancouver, and Clarke thumbed his nose at everyone in the process. Guys were ticked at Clarke's bloated offer to an unproven Kesler which forced the Canucks to pay a lot more for him... a very similar situation to what Kevin Lowe paid for Dustin Penner. Some GMs have long memories, so now when a stud like Carter comes up, there will be a few huge offers. The question becomes will the Flyers be able to pony up, with Richards, Timmonen and Briere to pay? What about Prospal? He wants a significant raise too. There will be several GMs waiting in the bushes. And don't espect Carter to sign before July. Why would a guy not wait out the process and see what he is worth? It would be stupid to sign early and take the competition out of the game.

Thank god ,Kaberle backed out.Carter has been playing awesome since the non-deal.The Flyers should rethink strongly about hanging on to him.If it comes down to him or Umberger,I'd go with Carter.

Gocanada> The only place you might hear a rumor reported like that with regard to Lecavalier is in "Le Press" or "The Gazette" in Montreal.

I think Carter will be here for 5-7 more years....Holmgren has gotten pretty good at this long term deal contract....Briere 8 years....Timonen 7 years....Hartnell 5 years....Richards 12 years...
The guys Holmgren has to lock up are Carter, Coburn, Lupul, Kukkonen, and Parent....The flyers need those core guys in order to be competive year in and year out...
The cap should definitely go up this year....So we'll see what kind of money they can throw at Carter, Prospal, and possibly someone else....
What they need is for Hatcher, Rathje, Gauthier to get off the books....either by trading them or they retire (Gauthier is too young to retire, but not good enough to play in the NHL).....

phillyfool27> I will take your comment about Canada with a grain of salt considering you are spouting your silly remark from a place that is commonly known as "the city of brotherly love." and in addition from a Country that has a City called San Francisco which is known for two things. The 49ers and, what's the other thing?
Come on guy, give it a rest.

yeah, ain't THAT the truth, eh Baun-ded? How many different deals has Lecavalier been traded to the Canadiens in now, according to Le Presse? Gotta be double digits, at least, haha, but the Sun isn't much better - just happens to be in english

How about we inject a touch of reality into this discussion. First, don't forget that submitting an offer sheet means squat. The player must sign that offer sheet. Second, my guess is that Homer offers 3.5-4 mil. Third, Carter has stated a number times that he is very happy in Philly so it will probably take an offer of well over 4 mil to lure him away. Possibly upwards of 5 mil. Now, I have always liked Jeff Carter and felt that he will become a major force for the Flyers, but I'm not sure I would want to give up 4 first round picks for the opportunity to pay him 5 mil. a year. Just food for thought.

Hey Gocanada- It was double digits while the Sens were still waiting for Emery to show up for practice. You say the Sun is in English?
Wingsfan#1-They must have taken down that fools comment I was addressing. It wasn't because I didn't want to offend...its just that typing it started my ears a ringing and saying it to loud might have upset the rickter scale. But thank you for enlightening everyone on my behalf.
Weapon X- If he's that good, whos his agent so that the Leafs can send an offer sheet?

Carter will be a priority but Umberger may be passed on as well as Vinny. I think Gagne's replacement in Prospal may be just that. There's going to be a lot of big paychecks handed out next year and the cap may restrict some of Homer's plans.
