Riley plans more scouting trips

Looking past the game at hand no longer is being viewed as a sin by the Heat. Instead, it is seen as the path to salvation. Back after missing two games while scouting the NCAA Tournament, coach Pat Riley said he could be back on the road, and away from the team again by the end of the week. Among those he viewed during his stops at Omaha, Neb., Little Rock, Ark., Anaheim, Calif., and Raleigh, N.C., were Kansas State forward Michael Beasley, Memphis guard Derrick Rose, Stanford center Brook Lopez, UCLA forward Kevin Love and North Carolina guard Ty Lawson.

Maybe he should do this as a living and let someone else coach the team.

March 25, 2008  08:06 AM ET

Wish I could get a little time away from the take-out window at McD's to scout the tourney myself.

March 25, 2008  08:33 AM ET

hof coach or not, this is ridiculous. stay with your team riley, there's plenty of time to scout...

March 25, 2008  08:42 AM ET

This is getting sad. Is he the only scout the Heat have employeed? How about you look at the team you have now and see what you got? I know it's not much, but some of those young players are playing for their future in the NBA as well.

March 25, 2008  09:18 AM ET

What's he gonna miss in the tourney that he can't watch in re-runs on tv? It's not like the draft is gonna save the Heat. If he can't figure out how to win with Wade, Marion, Haslem, Davis... a couple of All-Stars and some decent role players, then maybe he should be scouting for a new coach.

March 25, 2008  09:21 AM ET

Riley is full of "you know what." The players he's looking at are "can't miss" guys. What happens if you don't get the #1 pick? A smart coach would be looking at the rest of the pack. That way you could land an impact player regardless of where you end up on the draft board. Personally I hope he's fired, and doesn't end up being the "Decider." Look at the personnel he has now. This is the team he built. Enough said.

Easy way out you COWARD!!! You put this bad product together now have the guts to endure it.

March 25, 2008  09:55 AM ET

This is just another way to pull a "Larry Brown midseason I'm burnt out and pouting so beg me to stay" ploy. Pat, go away tis best for you!

This is another way of letting us know he dont want to coach another losing team I beat hed come back if they won 15 in a row.

Hate to be those college players being scouted. I mean I would much rather play in Minnesota or Seattle than Miami. They better just hope Miami loses in the draft. They really made an effort to tank the season, but I am not surprised because of the mess over there. Still, thanks for giving the Wolves a protected first round draft pick, that will come in handy! The funny thing they are not guarenteed a first or second pick in the draft, in fact they are not even likely to get Rose or Beasly.

The odds of them getting the...
first pick is .250
second pick .215
third pick .178
fourth pick .357
*granted they keep the worst record.....which is probably the case*

So that means they have a .465 chance of getting Rose or Beasley and a better chance of not landing them.

March 25, 2008  10:20 AM ET

oops, misspelled Beasley

Problem with that is as soon as the another coach makes the team a contender, that coach mysteriously needs to spend more time with his family, quits (right before the playoffs) and Riles step in!

What a pathetic loser!

* Riles STEPS in *

March 25, 2008  10:25 AM ET

Riley is funny. Talk about not wanting to be around your team. He is the only coach I see that take time off in the season to scout players. Winning is not important to this guy anymore, he's making the Heat the laughing stock of the league.

March 25, 2008  10:29 AM ET

Riley,

How about you scout for a retirement home? It'd be much better to your legacy.

The reason I dislike Eli Manning is because he adamantly would NOT go to the Chargers! I thought, what a punk to demand San Diego not sign him because he wouldn't not accept being on the Chargers roster-period!

Now, not only would I not blame Rose, Beasley and the like if they did the same, I might even encourage them to do so!

Pat Riley will continue scouting college players during the NCAA tournament, then go on vacation in the south of France, deliver several speeches about ???The Winner Within??? and maybe catch his team???s final game of the season.

Draft Beasley and we'll trade Luke Walton, Koby Karl and DJ Mbenga for him. Then IT WILL BE EVEN LOVELIER IN LAKERLAND!!!
