Bears may replace Benson
Pursuit of competition for Cedric Benson leads to Fayetteville, Ark., for Lovie Smith. The Bears coach had lunch with Arkansas running backs Darren McFadden and Felix Jones on Monday, a source told the Sun-Times. Smith and Southwest area scout Chris Ballard will attend the Razorbacks pro day today, an intriguing development for a franchise many figure to be in pursuit of an offensive tackle with the 14th pick of the first round. If the Bears' interest in either one or both is genuine, it could signal Benson's rehabilitation from a fractured left ankle is behind and the possibility would then exist he will be phased out of the team's plans.

They're certainly in a better draft position since the Niners would caught cheating...
ah.. waited all night to write that word about another team

As a former backer of Cedric Benson I'd say either one would be a huge improvement. As an alum of the same HS as Felix Jones I hope the Bears get him cuase no way DMc is still around unless the Bears trade away multiple picks to move up....

The Bears should get RB Rashard Mendenhall from Illinios. He is an all around back that proved he can shoulder the load and play against the big time teams.
Cedric Benson is garbage. He had good numbers at Texas but in the Big games against better competition he always sucked. When he got to the NFL you could really see that he is just like Ron Dayne. Nothing but a straight down hill runner with no instincts. My mother grew up in Midland, my boss is from Midland............He Still SUCKS!!!! He was a Bust coming out of College!
Mendenhall is way better than Felix Jones and will have a better career than McFadden.

With the QB's they Bears have, they really really really need a serious running game and just treat the QB position like the Raven's did with Dilfer, pray that the QB doesn't turn the ball over.
Benson isn't the long term answer and theres no way they'll get McFadden.
Maybe they'll give Shaun Alexander a call! :P

Alexander is garbage. Mendenhall offers lots of speed and explosion. He also catches better than any RB in the draft. Felix Jones is 200lbs soaking wet. He would not be an every down back for the Bears.
Mendenhall is 5-11 225lbs and he can do it all. This will help the entire offense. It will make the playaction more realistic and give Grossman a chance at the only type of play he runs well......
They should look at getting Brian Brohm, Chad Henne, or Joe Flacco in the 2nd round or an OT.

And you are spot on about Mendenhall. I saw him in that bowl game against USC... and that game against Wisconsin... he can flat out play.
He has great speed, hands out of the backfield and vision. He hits the holes fast, keeps his legs churning and battles. When theres nothing there he has the speed/agility/power to make something out of nothing.

Illinois ran alot of spread, but they also ran a lot of pro sets as well.
Remember that Arkansas ran a lot of gimic formations such as the Wild Hog formation with McFadden and Jones back there. That will not happen in the NFL. They had a lot of delayed runs.
What will happen when Felix Jones lines up in the I-Formation against a NFL Defense? He only ran a 4.46??? A guy that is only speed. What does he run in pads? Will he get past the Linebackers in the NFL? Jones will not be that successful as a PURE NFL RB.

Da' Bears need to do soemthing about Benson & Grossman. As a RAIDERS fan, I don't have much room (if any) to criticize another NFL team, but the Bears were so close to beign the best, it hurts as a football fan to see them wallow like this. It's not like they are the cheating 49'ers (that one was for KPKahder).

Felix Jones will be a good running back. He won't be a "starter" but does that really matter anymore in the NFL? Most teams have a good 2 RB system they use. If he can come in as a change of pace RB for a powerful RB(hope you're reading this Jerry Jones), then he can succeed.

This may well be pre-draft ****, Don't be surprised if Mendenhall doesn't go BEFORE McFadden. Although the premise of the story, that Benson is behind schedule on his rehab and out of favor with the Bears, that part just makes sense.
Beyond that,....?

Besides, what is the Bears more pressing need, a RB or a QB? If Angelo & Lovie don't do something soon about the QB situation, there may be another great fire in Chicago. Wouldn't it be easier to get a serviceable RB in the second round and draft a QB or OL in the first round? Oh, I forgot the Bears long-standing tradition (i.e. Sayers and Payton) of getting a great back and running him to death behind a third rate offensive line. Sorry, my bad!

QB's take time to develop. RB's you can throw into the lineup immediately and get some production. We all saw rookie Adrian Peterson explode onto the scene and carry the Vikings. With the Bears defense + solid ground game it would open up the passing attack a bit, take some pressure off of whoever is manning the QB position and allow them to focus on short passes and play action.

Minnesota could afford to do that because they've got a couple of All-Pro's on their offensive line. The lack of a quality OL is going to get the Bears RB hammered, especially if they don't get a decent QB to mount a respectable passing game. This is not an easy situation to fix because it's been neglected for so long.

They need to start that rebuild with the offensive line.
They need to shore that up first

Most of you are missing the point. The Bears lost 2 OL starters from one of the worst units in the league. They also failed to address the OL in free agency. They lost their 2 starting WRs from one of the worst WR units. They picked up some castaways.
If they waste another 1st rd pick on a RB, Angelo should be tossed into Lake Michigan. In January. They do have 10 picks total which will allow some flexibility, but your chances of getting immediate help on the OL in the 1st rd are much better than a RB/QB.
No cliche rings more true than "it starts up front." They need to go T/G in 2 of their first 3 picks. And WR early as well.
I would love to take a chance on Mendenhall or Brohm/Flacco early, but this isn't 2 years ago. Their ineptitude in drafting offense the past few years is finally going to come back to hurt them because they have to address "need."
