Earnhardt, Mears under pressure

Casey Mears is just one of several NASCAR drivers whose season so far has been filled with question marks. Of course, this hasn't been a great season yet for any of the Rick Hendrick drivers. But Martinsville Speedway, this week's Sprint Cup stop, is a very good track for Hendrick's Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon. But what about Mears, the fourth man on the roster? Is he getting the job done? Since Hendrick has won eight of the last 10 Cup races at Martinsville, and five poles, there will be pressure on both Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Mears this weekend.

This is such an incomplete article that utilizes little "E's" name in the title so it might generate a lot of search result hits, but is in fact, as presented, about Mears. Without any substantiation the 1st place driver in the stable is under the same pressure as the 4th place. In fact the only driver in Hendrick's team who can afford a less than stellar result in Martinsville, is Jr.
As much as I didn't want to help this thread, with a post; I couldn't help it.

Same here johnny.........there is pressure on EVERYONE, especially those straddling the 35 spot. And jr's name has what to do with Casey's subpar performance this year? By the way.....Casey did win a race last year!

March 25, 2008  10:30 AM ET

If anything, I would venture there's less pressure on Jr. than any of the other HMS drivers. He's the only one that's had a good season thusfar.

March 25, 2008  10:39 AM ET

Correct nin, there is no pressure on Jr to perform and he know how to get around the paper clip anyhow, last year he was doing great before he blew up so Jr could possibly win this weekend.

March 25, 2008  11:07 AM ET

I get the feeling that whoever selects these stories to post has never even seen a NASCAR race. If they did they certainly didn't know what the hell they were watching.

March 25, 2008  11:08 AM ET

All of you are correct,Jr does not have pressure at all
so far he is the only one showing anything for HMS.
A crappy artical Winston-Salem Journal as useal

March 25, 2008  11:34 AM ET

My mistake folks Jr. finished both races he did not blow up. He got 5th in the first race so he is a contender.

March 25, 2008  12:10 PM ET

Yeh Jackman I went to the Vegas race, we now have an off road back door in and out! No more taking 2 hours to get to Nellis Blvd! Not sure if they serve, I am a BYOB kind of person.
Reading this article, it does not make any sense, it says the 88 is under pressure?

March 25, 2008  12:47 PM ET

Why is there pressure on Jr???? The only pressure he has is winning a race and not his preformance. Who is the highest ranked Hendrick driver in the standings? Folks need to have their facts staight before they write things.

March 25, 2008  01:38 PM ET

Lucky guy Hammered.
I wonder what will happen if Casey dosnt improve this year....nice guy too.

March 25, 2008  02:29 PM ET

I really did think Mears would do better this year being in Kyle's old car but he hasn't faired very well yet!

March 25, 2008  02:53 PM ET

Nice guy or not, Hendrick will bring in another driver next year if Casey doesn't get into the chase. And after this weekend he may not even be in the top 35 cuz he doesn't do too well at the paperclip. Martin Truex Jr is in a contract year right now and races for Dale Jr. in the Nationwide Series, wouldn't that be the ultimate coup d'etat by Hendrick to leave DEI in complete disarray if Truex bolted for Hendrick next year?

March 25, 2008  02:57 PM ET

Im pretty sure Eahnhardt does well at Martinsville....Mears just isnt very good.

March 25, 2008  03:57 PM ET

I would LOVE it if Truex left TEI to be a team mate of Jrs. next year... now THAT would make my day!!!!

March 25, 2008  04:27 PM ET

Mears is under pressure. He stinks and all of his teammates are winning (or were winning last year).

March 25, 2008  05:26 PM ET

Everyone of those drivers is a professional.....Sure there's pressure on some. I think the only pressure on D.E.J. is what he puts on himself. After all, he is the most popular driver in NASCAR......Owners, sponcers and yes, even other drivers, know that. If Dale Jr. were not around, this sport would loose some serious numbers on attendance at the tracks and on television ratings!

March 25, 2008  05:59 PM ET

Junior's team has been the best of HMS so far this year. If you were to grade Mears' performance so far it would be a C-. Which is around his usual C grade anyway.

March 25, 2008  07:56 PM ET

I think there's incredible pressue on Jr. to win a race this year and, once he does, I think the distraction will be lifted and he can focus on the cup. The expectations are too much right now. I'm pulling for you Jr. Get that win and let's bring HMS back to it's winning ways.

March 25, 2008  10:15 PM ET

this is being overraated a bit,i mean both jr and mears are good race car drivers and wont get fired anytime soon,so its no biggy

March 26, 2008  09:12 AM ET

THERE'S PRESSURE ON ALL OF THE HENDRICKS DRIVERS. SO FAR DALE IS THE ONLY ONE DOING ANYTHING SO I THINK THERE IS LESS PRESSURE ON HIM THEN THE OTHERS.
