Center Matt Birk is skipping the Vikings' voluntary offseason conditioning program, but his agent said it has nothing to do with a contract dispute. "It's the same thing he did last year," agent Joe Linta said Monday. "He worked out on his own last offseason and went out and had the best year of his career. It's no different than that, and it's not a contract dispute." Birk, who couldn't be reached for comment, is in the final year of a contract worth $5.32 million in base salary plus a $400,000 roster bonus. Without a contract extension, this could be his final season with the team, but Linta said that's not the reason behind Birk's absence from the conditioning program, which is in its second week.

Birk is a Blue Collar Stud. He is fine. He will be a very coveted free agent if he is allowed to walk. I think he will too, because Ryan Cook is actually a Center.....But Birk will find a home within the first three days of free agency even at his age.

He'll be fine. He's got a great sense of humor,so I can't wait to hear what he says about this.

Birk is a respected member of the NFL community. I wish there were more stories about him, instead of Mr. Make It Rain Jones.

Six-time pro-bowler and yet still have to do some of these things.... such is life in the NFL, even the "good guys" like Birk (and really good player) have to do this stuff with the "voluntary" tasks to get mgmts attention.

Yep..awesome player.

Another Non story

Glad to hear that isn't about money, because these players are just getting outrageous with it. Do what you do Birk and have another career year!

Matt does what he does. He plays great football. To heck with the details!!!!!

Management better take heed with this. The up and coming athletes of this generation don't need the same old crap of yesteryear.

The key word here is "voluntary". Why does missing something you don't have to go to become a huge deal?

March 26, 2008  08:46 AM ET

I believe that "voluntary" is only used because the labor contract doesn't allow mandatory practices prior to a certain point...can someone correct me if I'm wrong.

It's like in the business world when their are "voluntary" meetings or other items which are "voluntary" to participate in...they can't force you, but it is looked down upon!

Thats my cousin
he needs to go to the patriots next year

March 26, 2008  08:30 PM ET

It is a contract dispute. You could hear it in his voice on the Power trip radio show in the morning when they asked him about it. They haven't talked extension with his contract. I know he's getting older but he is the perfect image of what the team is trying to do by surrounding itself with good guys and McKinnie.

Matt Birk, a Harvard man and a star in the NFL. A real mensch. As always, he will do the right thing. Matt, call Sid or else no dog bone cookies!

There is no way Chilly-Mac will cut (not resign) Birk. he is a hometown fan favorite who has given it is all every single year! Trade? This is NOT the guy you want to get rid of if you are trying to build fan support for a new stadium! Step up Zygi and get this done.
