Good for him, home state pride

The headline is slightly deceptive: the story / blurb contiues as follows:

"Edina running back Mike Rallis has committed to the Gophers as a walk-on, passing on similar offers from Southern Cal, Wisconsin and Miami."

I wouldn't travel to LA or Miami from Edina, MN just to walk on either. Smart kid.

He's a walk-on ... who gives a rat's behind?!?!?

March 25, 2008  09:28 AM ET

He still has time to change his mind. If he is that good, he should change his mind.

March 25, 2008  09:53 AM ET

HEAR ME AND HEAR ME WELL....ONE DAY THE GOPHERS WILL RISE UP AND BITE ALL OF YOU IN THE ****!!!!!!!!

Sincerely,

Minnesota Golden Gophers

this guy is walking on and grabbing a headline??

March 25, 2008  11:41 AM ET

He wouldn't play at SC so the decision was a no-brainer.

March 25, 2008  11:48 AM ET

I'm a little confused about this article.

If the kid is a walk-on, why is this a "story", and why would he "commit" to a team that is not committed to him? "Walk-ons" don't commit. The beg to try out and then hopefully make the team with a lot of luck.

That would be like having another article about a "C student from Edina High School commits to Havard, regardless of whether he is admitted or not." This is a story?

If he wants to go to a particular school and try out for the football team, fine. But why an article like "Joe Schmoe, a walk-on who never played football, tries out for and commits to the Ball State Cardinals, and finds happiness."

I swear I should have went into journalism(too bad it doesn't pay better).

March 25, 2008  02:49 PM ET

That is awesome...Finally someone who has some pride in Minnesota and is willing to stay. We need more guys like him!!!

March 25, 2008  05:01 PM ET

The Gophers will have no excuse to not be good in a year or two

March 25, 2008  08:58 PM ET

This years high school seniors were full of tallent, the fact that this kid didn't get a scholorship offer is a little crazy. The schools mentioned all most likly asked him to walk on this year because they thought he was good enough to make the team.

It's called a preferred walk-on. You don't get a scholarship, but you are automatically on the football team. Nate Montana had offers from USC and Notre Dame for that as well. He took Notre Dame obviously.

March 26, 2008  02:35 PM ET

Minnesota has a football team?

Good for them... But who really cares!

As for Montana's offspring... He better get used to "riding pine"... Maybe Clausen can show him how to "AVOID" the pass rush or how to refill the water cooler.

Do we ever. We have two football teams. One in the Gophers going for 7th national title in team history and we salso have a pro football team unlike So Cal.

I prefer Shieks

thank god he didnt come out here to sc as a walk, because even if he was a 5 star rb he would be number 4 or 5 on the rb depth chart, so can you say special teams player for 2 years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
