The Jets averted a significant offseason headache when receiver Laveranues Coles on Monday reported to the team's offseason strength and conditioning program - amid strong signs he's on the verge of working out a contract extension. Coles, who's made it clear he wants a long-term contract extension, had threatened to be a no-show in the program, which is voluntary.

About time. Suprising they have any money left...

March 26, 2008  09:14 AM ET

The 11 million two year deal he had seems fair to me. He is the top receiver on a losing team, not one of the top receivers in the NFL. He will not be the last Jet vet to want to renogiate their contract after all the money the team threw around in FA.

March 26, 2008  09:19 AM ET

50year, isn't that the way the system works, though? Play out your contract and make your payday in free agency.

March 26, 2008  09:48 AM ET

This guy isn't worth the money anyways.............Jets can keep him.

March 26, 2008  10:34 AM ET

Let me know when he actually signs the blasted thing.

This guy isn't worth the money anyways.............

sday- have you ever even watched him play?
he is tough, fast, plays hurt, gets CRUSHED everytime he catches the ball, cause Chad lobs the ball up in the air.
- is he amongst the top 10 receivers n the game? No.
but he's a solid player & we don't even know what the money is....

Yes I have seen him play.......He isn't among the top 10.......should be happy with what he is getting paid for the contract HE signed......He shouldn't be speaking to the media publicly with his complaints and criticisms.....and he has done what in the last 3 years?

March 26, 2008  12:40 PM ET

Big deal !!! Injury prone malcontent - a dime a dozen !!!

March 26, 2008  01:03 PM ET

He deserves to get hurt for not honoring his existing contract,,,make sure
the contract only pays if he plays every game.....

March 26, 2008  01:21 PM ET

TwoStepBend..yes, that is the way the system works. He already worked it once though. If you check out the ESPN football site, there is one persons listing of the 65 top receivers in the NFL. I think Coles is rated around #50. Point being: He is not even a top twenty receiver in the NFL. The Jets should have said, play your contract out or go home...It is a fair contract..

March 26, 2008  01:56 PM ET

Anyone who says Coles isn't a good WR either hasn't watched him play or hates on him because he plays for the Jets. He may not be considered top 10 or 20 in the NFL stat wise, but he is a very, very solid WR. He goes after EVERY ball, blocks, fights for extra yards, and most importantly, is a team leader. These guys look to him because he plays hurt and plays hard. Don't hate because he isn't TO or Randy or Chad Johnson, he doesn't make all that "noise" that those guys do, but he is a guy im happy to have on my team.

March 26, 2008  02:49 PM ET

50year: I think we were agreeing, I just didn't express my point well. I was responding to your comment about how he won't be the last vet to complain. They'll complain, but they shouldn't, since (assuming they perform) they'll have their shot at a big contract too.

March 26, 2008  03:31 PM ET

Same old story, player doesn't want to play out his current contract. Holds out of camp. Team signs him to 5 year $60 million contract. $40 million guaranteed. Player looses his skills in 2 seasons. Willing to rework his contract. Does not care because he's got $40 million in the bank.

Rinse Lather Repeat

March 26, 2008  05:39 PM ET

So he's about to sign another contract that he won't play out.

I must admit I haven't had a chance to watch him - BECAUSE HE IS ALWAYS HURT - SAVVY ? Team leader ??? He was prepared not to come to camp without more money !!! He is a fair second receiver - nothing more nothing less . He is a "dime a dozen"!!!

March 26, 2008  06:19 PM ET

For what it is worth Souts Inc. rates him 32nd of the receivers. They are not the last word, and is an opinion, but he is not an elite receiver. Just the best on his team. Here is their take on him. Sounds accurate. You can lay the blame on the QB, but the record speaks for itself..
32. Laveranues Coles
New York Jets
Coles isn't big (5-11, 193), but he is as tough as they come and the Jets' quarterbacks rely on him to get open. Coles has elite deep speed, but with the Jets' difficulties in pass protection and Chad Pennington's suspect arm strength, he hasn't been able to use these talents as much as expected. That could change with Kellen Clemens behind center and a revamped offensive line.

March 26, 2008  08:39 PM ET

LiveFreeOrDieHard ..I agree. He will get one more chance. He did take them to the play offs in the past and they cannot get that out of their heads...And Mangini is on a short rope, he will go down with Pennington or up with him. Coaches on teh hot seat go with vets, it is their best chance. Why lose with potential that the next guy gets to win with?

March 26, 2008  10:34 PM ET

The Jets suck anyways. No matter how much they loaded up they're still gonna be second to the Pats. Why? Because their coach is a no-brained d***head, The Jets are gonna fail and i'm gonna sit here and enjoy watching Mangina go down

March 27, 2008  01:28 PM ET

Uhhhhhh, like who cares. The Jets and the Dolphins are basement teams anyway!!
