Tempe should brace itself for a Shaq attack. Police confirmed Tuesday that Phoenix Suns star Shaquille O'Neal is set to become a volunteer with the Tempe Police Department in the near future. O'Neal was at the station last Thursday to discuss with Police Chief Tom Ryff what he will be doing within the department, said Sgt. Cindy Davies, a police spokeswoman. Davies said it has not been determined what duties O'Neal will be assigned, but he will most likely start work after the season is over.

Shaq: Yes I'd like to apply for the donut eating department. I will like to start this offseason so that I can be as fat as possible before training camp.

They should arm him with bricks instead of other weapons. Shaq is pretty good at throwing up bricks,

March 26, 2008  09:20 AM ET

Shaq already helped catch a hit and run driver by following the vehicle while contacting police.

Shaq's involvement in the community is laudable and a good sign in general.
However, as fans, we would rather see Shaq focus on improving certain parts of his game while he still has a basketball career. His playing days are winding down, and he may not be around more than another year or two.
He should spend his spare time practicing free throws, practicing baseline moves (eg fadeaway's and hookshorts), and doing aerobics, so that he can have a strong end to his career.

JayL.

I agree with you. You have to love that he wants to help the community (what millionair wants to be a cop?) but he shoudl concentrate on job #1 first. He only has 1-2 years left in him anyway.

leave it be shaq's just trying to be a good citizen..he may be a lot of things on the court but you got to respect the man off the court

March 26, 2008  11:32 AM ET

Shaq will be fine. $100 million means he doesn't have to go to work for the same reason the rest of us do. This job is an admirable contribution to society after his playing days are over.

March 26, 2008  11:43 AM ET

I like Shaq and if he was in adifferent conference, I would actually want him to spend the off season improving his game. But, since he in the Western Conference again, but not wearing LAKERS gold, I just want him to do well and have a good life.

March 26, 2008  12:08 PM ET

He should star in Steve Nash' big screen debut about millionaire cops vs. millionaire criminals.

March 26, 2008  12:09 PM ET

Shaq has to be happy to do well on the court, we wasn't happy in Miami this year and he is happy in PHX, Hey LAKERLANDERS we are coming for you!!!

March 26, 2008  12:43 PM ET

You know, the whole concept of "Lakerland" is confusing.
"Laker" means having to do with LAKES. A lake is a body of water, meaning
it's NOT LAND.
So, those fans from "Lakerland" are highly confused individuals.

Don't get me wrong I like Shaq when he was in Magic & Lakers But now he'll do a better job as a Tempe Police volunteer than playing with the Sun. He is big enough to be rent a cop but too big to play basketball (deasel run out)

March 26, 2008  02:47 PM ET

I'll take back what I said, He will not even do a good job as a police Volunteer 115 degrees normal temperature here in the summer and not too many 7eleven now he is in trouble.

Who is the man
That would risk his neck for his brother, man?
(Shaq) Can ya dig it?
Who's the cat that won't cop out
When there's danger all about
(Shaq) Right on!
You see this cat, Shaq is one bad mother
(Shut your mouth)
But I'm talking about Shaq!
(Then we can dig it)
