Man City chasing Mexican star
Posted: Wednesday March 26, 2008 08:12AM ET
Manchester City could add its second Mexican star this summer by acquiring Barcelona starlet Giovani Dos Santos. City has expressed interest in Dos Santos, according to the player's father, Zizinho. Dos Santos has struggled for playing time since Bojan Krkic has hit his stride and become a regular in the Barcelona rotation. If Dos Santos does join city, he would join Mexican forward Nery Castillo.

You know, I really think it would be stupid of Barca to get rid of him. He's going to be a star, and I just wouldn't recommend sending him out of town. Now if you sent him out on loan, that would be different. Then you could get him back after he has gained some experience and plug him into the lineup.

Report Offensive CommentWay too small for the EPL. He's going to be bullied playing against big defenders like Ferdinand, Terry, Vidic, and Carragher, etc. He's a good player with a lot of potential, but he should remain with La Liga or head over to the Serie A if he wants to get playing time.

Report Offensive CommentI agree RedeffinDevil, he definetly is to small to play in the EPL, but if he isn't getting any play time anyway why not try the EPL and if it doesn't work he will still be back where he started if he chooses to return to La Liga, or try Serie A.

Report Offensive CommentDamn if he's gonna play in the EPL for Man City then he might as well head back to Mexico on loan!!! Hey an even better idea would be a swap deal with Chelsea for Lampard.....hey he has a Catalan wife and the Barca cloud has been over his head for awhile!! :-)

Report Offensive CommentIdk about being too small for the EPL. Yeah, he is small, but he's only 18 and will noly grow bigger. Plus, check out what players like Nani, Babel, and Walcott have done. Dos Santos can adapt i think.
With the rise of Bojan, Dos Santos has only scored goal this season. Sure, he CAN be part of the future of Barca, but he'll have to wait on the bench some more and wait for the likes of Ronnie and Deco to be sold to even have a shot.

Report Offensive CommentYou guys this kids only 17. He's still growing. He's still getting better. You're meaning to say that a 17 year old who gets a lot of playing time in Barcelona won't make a difference with Manchester City? Gimmie a break. Small players aren't always bad.
For instance, Jimmie Johnstone, one of the greatest Celtic players ever, was only 5'7" but used his ball handling, speed and talent to succeed in a very physical scottish league.
Though size matters, last time I checked it's not the only thing that does. tehe

Report Offensive CommentDiego Armando Maradona was barely taller than a penguin. He was good I think.

Report Offensive CommentOnly time will tell how good he will be, but the potential is there. He should get loaned out, as finding a starting spot on another team will be easier than with Barca. That experience he will gain will only add to his skill. Regardless, Dos Santos is destined for greatness. Give him a break, this is his first season with Barca's first team.
But I am telling you people.....the Dos Santos story has barely even begun.

Report Offensive CommentOh, and i just read that he has been playing this whole season with an injury. That injury now requires surgery, which he says he will take during the offseason.
Why did he play with it? In his words, " he did it for the team". That a boy! But now you need surgery :(

Report Offensive CommentThe only reason he's relevant is because he plays for Barca. He's good enough, he's not a star. The only Mexican to reach that level was Hugo Sanchez. That's cause he was an acrobatic poacher.
GDS will disappear on any other team in the world.

Report Offensive CommentNYStateofMind: you are SO right. He is very overrated. Whenever he is on the pitch, Barca looks horrible. Bojan is almost 2 years younger than Gio but looks like he has twice the footballing acumen.
Gio is a kid who can run fast and...uh...run fast.
Constantly knocked off the ball with ease and questionable finishing. Not a good combination especially going to a league that lacks anything resembling finesse.
sithomeandrot | 03/27/08, 09:48 AM
Report Offensive CommentHe still has plenty of time to develop; I don't think the EPL is for him and its not cuz of his size; Maradona is like 5'6" and Pele was just a bit taller
Big Chaco | 03/27/08, 08:33 PM
Report Offensive CommentGio is small, but Castillo who already plays there is even smaller and is a starter for them, not at the forward spot, but at the wing. Gio also plays more of a wing in Barca, so if he goes there he would play every game and could then take the place of a forward or right wing player. Vela is another player that will be playing for Arsenal and he's a little taller than Gio and has been playing for Osasuna this year and is a starter and one of the best players, so I think Gio can do good, but personally I want him in the spanish league.

Report Offensive CommentSend him.... He's not Elite, he may be a good player but he is not a star. They are wasting there time with him.
