Why Gaffney re-signed with Patriots

Some players can't wait for unrestricted free agency and the chance to have 32 teams in a potential bidding war. Others are content to be one-stop shoppers. Count receiver Jabar Gaffney in the latter category. When Gaffney's contract expired after the 2007 season, he told his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, he was only interested in re-signing with the Patriots. Perhaps he would have been swayed had another club called with a megabucks offer, but it turns out Gaffney didn't even seriously listen to other suitors.

Uh, I don't know.....why did A-Rod stay with the Yankees??

When the Boston Globe probed further and directly asked Gaffney, he responded "what the **** do you think? I like to win you dumb ****"

Good one At_Home, but lets not forget that having Moss lining up on the other side of the field does a lot to distract the defenders. Gaffney I think spent more time at the #2 spot than Stallworth did, especially at the end of the season. That was just my perception though.

It's a concept I like.

Like Kirby Puckett staying in Minny because his wife could walk to the car alone after a game. Means more to me than an extra million.

Actually BigBlue the #2 receiver spot with the Patriots belongs to Wes Welker. Gaffney and Stallworth shared time as the #3. But you are right, Gaffney began getting the lion's share of the #3 on field time as the season came to an end and the play-offs ensued.

You call yourself a patriot fan? Welker was actually the slot receiver or Number 3 receiver. The number 2 lines up on the other end. Just because he was the second option or so it would seem the number one option all year for Brady doesnt make him a number 2. Slot receiver=number 3.

When you won't garner any interest in other teams because of your mediocrity, it's best to stay in the same place,

March 27, 2008  11:18 AM ET

He's just staying because he knows of a cheap place to get some blank videotapes.

I think this guy did a good job last year and it was wise of the Patriots to keep him but I just think like many of the Wideouts that have left the Patriots in the past that he wouldn't likely be able to produce nearly as well outside of that system.

March 27, 2008  12:33 PM ET

He will have a much bigger role in the offense this year since Donte has left the team.

March 27, 2008  12:37 PM ET

Let's see Stallworth gone = more playing time for me on a Superbowl contender - I'll sign on the dotted line !!!

March 27, 2008  12:41 PM ET

He is drunk with Kool aid.

March 27, 2008  12:47 PM ET

It's good Kool Aid though!

Loyalty is the word, and nobody was going to give this guy big bucks anyway!

March 27, 2008  01:14 PM ET

I guess the Cowboys love their criminals as much as the Knicks!!

March 27, 2008  02:14 PM ET

Maybe because there wouldn't be any "mega-bucks" offer for a third receiver? This is the dumbest story yet. Another of those piped -up Patriots "loyalty" stories. Jabar Gaffney is not any more than a #3 anywhere... so why move? Ridiculous.

March 27, 2008  02:33 PM ET

I agree with joec. He was average with the Texans.

March 27, 2008  03:41 PM ET

This is good news. It's all good...

March 27, 2008  03:59 PM ET

Give this guy credit for not going to the highest bidder. Don't see much of that in athletes any more..............right A-fraud?

March 27, 2008  04:36 PM ET

you are correct! you must commend a guy for working for less money!

however, it is strange how people get upset with athletes getting money but when a company offers 3 to 5k more a year you people leave your jobs.

anyhow, back to uh.... gaffney. he is a "average" talent with "average" speed". although he took playing time away from stallworth, the offense will lack a real veritical threat outside moss. therefore, teams can continue to double cover moss and put their slower less athletic dbs on welker and gaffney.
