Mickelson losing distance in '08

07:54 AM ET 03.27 | Even though Tiger Woods gets most of the attention when anybody talks about the Masters and who could win it, you can be sure that Phil Mickelson is amping up his own preparations, and right now too. Last week, Mickelson had one good round and three so-so rounds at Doral and got out of town with a tie for 20th. He's off this week, but next week, Mickelson is playing the Shell Houston Open to get his putting game in order. But he's also showing up with a couple of other wrinkles to iron out. It's actually this problem: He's hitting it shorter and shakier than last year. Mickelson has found only 55% of his fairways, down slightly from 2007 and far off his 62.9% in 2004 when he won the Masters for the first time. He's also averaging 292.3 yards in driving distance, more than eight yards shorter than in 2006 when he won the Masters for the second time.

Yawn.

Phil is the classic underachiever. I have no idea why people are so enamored with him. He has more talent than anyone on tour not named Tiger Woods but his career is nowhere near where it should be. He should have at least 5-7 Major titles and he'll be leaving his prime pretty soon so he needs to get it together.

bigdog1002 is clueless. Phil is already wealthy enough to never work again. he has a young family and chooses to concentrate much of his efforts there. just because he is not consumed with image and greed makes him a nice guy and fun to watch.

Currently, Phil is ranked 2nd in the world and finished 2nd overall in 07. I wouldn't consider that to be an underachiever. Granted he has not won the majors like a No. 2 should, but he has done well elsewhere.

When I read that a 292-yard driving average is a sign of a slump, it just makes me want to cry about my own sad golf game. Ugh.

Phil is one of the greatest short game players of all time, and is still far ahead of Ernie Ells for #2 in the World.

World rankings. Now there's a subject for everyone.

Anybody know what the criteria is? My guess is that it is put out by 15 year olds who sniff glue.

Phil's ever enlarging **** **** are finally taking their toll on his game. Phil is a closet **** who thinks he is smarter than everyone else. If Tiger had Phil's natural ability combined with the work ethic that Earl taught him, Tiger would have already broke Jack's record of Major championship victories.

Phil is underrated. because he has to play w/ tiger

"Phil is already wealthy enough to never work again. he has a young family and chooses to concentrate much of his efforts there. just because he is not consumed with image and greed makes him a nice guy and fun to watch."

Nonsense!! Phil has openly stated that he wants to win. He has made swing changes, equipment changes and coaching changes in an effort to make that happen.

The drive to excel has little to do with image or greed; it's what separates great champions from people who have "potential".

When Phil captured his first majors you "Phil fans" were crowing "now that he's gotten a couple majors under his belt he's going to really start racking them up!" That hasn't come to pass, so now you want to start yapping about him being a "nice guy and fun to watch".

Give us a break!!

I'm sure Phil would have some choice words for you if you greeted him - after he'd just completed another tournament where he finished back in the pack - with something stupid like "Phil I don't care if you never win again; you're a nice guy and I enjoy watching you."

If you like watching a guy get his head handed to him week after week you've got some serious mental issues.

Right on, Dapper Dave. Couldn't have said it better myself. Those who love Phil, and hate Tiger (like the dimwit Pantysize, who has a penchant for making assanine comments on this blog) completely baffle me. Maybe its a love for the underdog, or maybe its a love for underperformers. Not sure.
