Carbonneau not angry with Roy

Posted: Thursday March 27, 2008 08:21AM ET

Guy Carbonneau says he and Patrick Roy are still friends even though they were on opposite sides of this week's junior hockey brawl controversy. Carbonneau, head coach of the Montreal Canadiens, is part owner of the Chicoutimi Sagueneens, whose goaltender Bobby Nadeau was pummelled by Quebec Remparts backup goalie Jonathan Roy, son of former NHL great Patrick Roy, the team's coach, general manager and part owner. "I always talk to him -- especially in the summer for golf -- and we always go to the draft together," Carbonneau said yesterday of his long-standing relationship with Patrick Roy. "My feelings haven't changed. He's still my friend. It's not because we're rivals that I won't talk to him. I'm kind of anxious to talk to him to see what his reaction was and how he dealt with it." Roy was suspended for five games and his son for seven over a melee that erupted during a Quebec Major Junior Hockey League playoff game Saturday in Chicoutimi.

It's Not!

Of course, this may all change if Roy ends up replacing Carbo in the future. Don't forget, this is the team that fired Jacques Demers the year after he won a Stanley Cup.

this exact story was on thehockeynews.com yesterday. Apparently the Sun decided to jump on the same kind of wagon this site does...

Apparently his son fights better than he does. I remember watching Patrick get "pummelled" by a Red Wing goalie.

Hey, hey. Good one tribe. I have that game on DVD at home. Watched it again yesterday. You're right. His son may never even make it to the NHL, but he's got a little bit of Ray Emery to him...
I won't shed a tear when MArtin Brodeur is going to wipe out Roy's name from the record books.

It should be the referees that get suspended for this incident. Fights happen, and those idiots are supposed to be there to break it up if it gets ugly. I see nothing wrong with what Roy did. That kid can fight, dang!

Ditto.

Bah, Martin Brodeur won't be able to touch some of Roy's record. Not a chance. He will break the win record though, of course.. but that's also in an era where there are no ties. I guess that doesn't really matter though, since it would only take Brodeur one extra season to break the record, but in my mind he's not even close to the greatness of Patrick Roy. True, Roy is a jack ****, but speaking from my own experience, 90% of goalies are.

cmh> I watched that fight on video last night too.
Vernon beat the crap out of him. What a mess Paticks face was afterwards.
Makes you wonder how many times Roy jr watched it. There are an awful lot of similarities in the two occurances to be just random. Then again, maybe its just a case of Roy living vacariously through his son now that he can't play anymore. I saw both Carbo and Burns talking about the incident. Regardless of what is said in the papers, neither one of them seems very impressed with the Rooster.

Tribe-Vernon fought back and was ready at center ice. The defenceman Roy jr got into it with was already tired when he engaged the idiot. Can't quite understand why the linesman let go of Roy jr in the first place either. He should have got him off the ice. Not that that would have stopped him.

Baun-ded, appreciate the info, still haven't seen the fight. My only comment was to make fun of Patrick...AND I'M AN AVS FAN!! He was a great goalie but I still didn't like him on my team. Too many times tried to handle the puck which would bite him in the arse. He was a smart mouth and a whiner. Couse the condition of Theodore and Budaj makes me wish we had someone like Patrick in net again. We being the AVS.

Love him or hate him, he is "currently" the best goalie to ever lace 'em up.

goCanada....the same bandwagon this site does? This site is designed as a 'bandwagon' site, actually. Its purpose is to pull articles from national headlines and provide them in the T&R section for blogging purposes. They arent on a bandwagon. They're simply funneling the news. And this is a story.

Statistics don't always tell the whole story. But even if they did, here are two to consider- Marty Brodeur has a both a better life time save percentage as well as a lower life time goals against average.
Both in the regular season and playoffs.
-----------------------------------
Before everyone jumps on this, I am also not saying that Marty is the best ever either. Just providing food for thought since everyone is entitled to their opinion even on bandwagon sites such as this.:)

o.k the score was 7-1( roys team losing) at the time with roy jr. manning the net at this point and he wants to fight (bobby nadeau) the other teams goalie?, he should've skated down to the other end and ask for some advice!

Baun-ded...I'm not going to jump on anything. 'cause I'm a Habs fan, there is a small bias in my opinion. However, objectively speaking, it is difficult to choose a "better" goalie between Roy and Marty. I think they are similar in so many ways that the only factor that makes Roy better is the "current" records, and the extra ring. Marty will get to his records and quite possibly win a fourth. Throw in his International achievments and higher SV% (which to me is a good measuring stick) and Marty WILL be better. But because Roy currnetly holds the two big records, it is easier to argue for him...that and because he's my freakin' favorite player!!!!!!! You get it.

Report Offensive Comment

You're saying that Marty is a better goalie than Roy?Roy has 4 Cups and 3 Conn Smythe's.THREE!!!Thats the award that stands out the most. How many Conn Smythes does Marty have?NONE.Marty will over-take Roy for sure on the all-time wins list, but he'll never gain the status as the best money goalie in the play-offs.Roy carried his teams all the way to the promised land. Its one thing to do it ONCE,but he did it 3 times!!!For that,to me,Roy is the best money goaltender in the play-offs.Of All Time.Roy is a 98 on a scale of 1-100 in the play-offs,Marty is a 90.Giggy is next at 88.4th place is in the 70's.(scale wise)

Report Offensive Comment

BOSTONGM...you aren't going to give any credit to who was in front of Roy for 2 of those rings? "Carried his team" is pretty bold considering who was out front of Roy don't you think? To an extent that is like saying Grant Fuhr carried the Edmonton Oilers to their cups and not taking into consideration as to who else was on the ice with him as well. I mean you have Sakic, Forsberg, Foote, Blake, Drury, Hejduk, Bourque just to name a few that were on the ice for 2 of those rings. I'm an AVS fan and I think "carried his team" is stretching it a bit.

Report Offensive Comment

Boston> what I'm saying is stats don't tell the whole story.
Besides when you have a couple of guys named Sakic and Forsberg it would be unfair to declare Roy carried the team.
Lastly, Marty wears smaller goal pads.:)

Tribe> I like the Fuhr analogy.
