Shaq rips Heat, Riley responds

Posted: Thursday March 27, 2008 07:17AM ET

Simmering differences between the Heat and Shaquille O'Neal boiled over Wednesday, with the massive center lobbing massive volleys at his former team. In a Boston Globe story, O'Neal trashed former teammates and his former coach while speaking about his move to the title-contending Suns. "We have professionals who know what to do," O'Neal said of playing for the Suns. "No one is asking me to play with Chris Quinn or Ricky Davis. I'm actually on a team again." However, O'Neal's comments struck a chord with both coach Pat Riley and Davis, as the Heat prepared for Wednesday night's game against the Knicks at Madison Square Garden, "It's sad that he says those things," Riley said before the 103-96 overtime loss. "We shared so much here, together, for three years, good and bad, three and a half years. "I just think it's sad that he's got to do that."

Shaq seems to be frustrated because Riley gutted the team. No way the Heat should have gotten rid of Posey, and Eddie Jones. Gary Payton should have been allowed come back, Walker had to go, but Ricky Davis has never been a winner. Shaq is a future Hall of Famer and Riley shouldn't expect him to play with inferior players like Davis and Quinn. The Heat have no defensive presence without Posey and Jones. Smush Parker was another mediocre player they expected Shaq to play with. Riley must take the blame and not get upset with Shaq for telling the truth. The Miami Heat's training staff is also inferior. Dwayne Wade has been unable to recover from nagging injuries for the past two seasons.

"No one is asking me to play with Chris Quinn or Ricky Davis.

Probably the best NBA quote in awhile, and so true. I can't stand Ricky Davis.

No offense though but didn't the Heat mortgage their future a few years ago to win a championship? Honestly it should have been expected. Then again they should of started young instead of adding Ricky avis no D and Mark Blount. That's bad.

Shaq has never been an Eddie Jones fan. He had problems with Jones in LA, and had problems with him in Miami. This is just Shaq being Shaq. He did the same thing in Orlando and LA. Says all of the right things when he gets to a place, then things go south and he forces his way out. I just don't see what his problem is. I'm a big Shaq fan and always have been, but it's this crap that gets old. He got his way and left a horrible team (one that SHOULD have been better than it was but sucked, in part, because of HIS play) to go to a contender. Why is this necessary? What's the point of running your mouth about guys who were out there working hard when you were "injured"?

Report Offensive Comment

Ricky Davis isn't any worse than Antoine Walker (you notice how HIS name doesn't even come with a "D"?). Every team has low-end talent, NBA-wise. That's the way it goes.

I've always been a huge shaq fan ever since the days of rim breaking with penny in orlando. But this guy is getting ridiculous, he acts as if he has a sense of entitlement to anything and everything, absolutely zero class it's really sad.

Report Offensive Comment

Every team may have low end talent, but they are not in the rotation either. Posey was the glue for that team defensively. Eddie Jones like him or not is a great on the ball defender. Take both of them away and you're left with Jason Williams trying to defend on the ball, not one of his strengths. Shaq has paid his dues........he can say what he wants.

Signs point to yes -- Shaq is classless.

Report Offensive Comment

Just because Shaq tells the truth, he has to be classless. I suggest that you look the word class up in the dictionary. Apparently you don't know the definition. If any player presently playing in the NBA has the resume to say what's on his mind, it's Shaq.

shaq wants to call himself a pro then he needs to learn to hit a free throw!!..riley did shaq a favor and shaqs got to be a ahole bout it

Report Offensive Comment

shaqs mad at riley because shaq always was out of shape and riley pushed him and didnt give in.....quit whining shaq........start calling u the BIG WHINER instead of big aristotlle

Report Offensive Comment

Then everyone has the right to go ahead and call him out and say he is fat out of shape and doesn't play with any heart and stop hailing him as one of the greatest big man STILL. he had his day but for him or anyone to still give him honor and glory as a dominate force is ridiculous. yes he has put in his dues, but he should evaluate himself before calling out others, especially those well more accomplished than him aka Pat Riley.

Report Offensive Comment

i agree....riley has more rings then shaq.. shaq should be grateful for getting out of miami...

Report Offensive Comment

Why is anyone surprised with Shaq's comments? The guy did the same damn thing when he left L.A. and he had won 3 rings out there. He's a true bandwagon teammate. When all is good he loves his coach and teammates, when things go bad, he backstabs everybody. He's done man. He's a washed up big man who's already slowed down the Suns. I'd be surprised if they made it out of the first round.

Report Offensive Comment

Shaq is 100% correct in what he said. However, he probably shouldn't have said it. His comments should have been toward the cause of the problem--Riley. Riley has been worse than Isiah, and that's saying something. Isiah has certainly overpaid for marginal talent. Riley has dismissed the talent at his dispoosal. Jason Kapono, James Posey, Eddie Jones, Gary Payton. Now he's considering trading Marion. Who else beside Riley thought Smush Parker was the answer? I will never forgive him for taking Dorrell Wright instead of Kevin Martin. Davis could be a decent role player off the bench. They could do a lot worse--as a starter, he's too inconsistent. Ditto; Chris Quinn. Name one player that has developed under Riley.

Definition for this use case: Informal. elegance, grace, or dignity, as in dress and behavior:

Pick which one you think applies to Shaq and his recent quotes. Hint: none of the above.

You have to have a resume to speak your mind? Where's yours son?

Report Offensive Comment

The problem with Shaq is that he always blame everyone else for any fault. Stand up and take some criticism! When you are the general of a team, you need to lead a team, not pointing fingers. This is like the old Shaq when he left Lakers, it's getting old and very unprofessional!

Is Phoenix better now with Shaq...? I doubt it, check the W-L columns before and after Shaq,

LOL! I am lughing at this stuff witrh SHAQ. Does anyone besides me FINALLY see a pattern here? Shaq shows up with a team, says how this is the BEST team and people around, plays for an average 3-5 years on a team and when people realize how lzy, out of shape and how UNWILLING he is to make himself or the team better and when he is not taking up 50% of the payroll he starts to quit on the team and the organization and seeks out to make one look bad (Penny hardaway, Kobe and Pat Riley).
This is typical SHAQ spoiled baby who cannot make a free throw nor is he willing to work out and help the team.

I believe more so with Kobe and Penny than I ever will with Shaq that those two guys were ever the problem with their team. Shaq proves now he was the one who wanted out of Los Angeles

Right after the Heat won their championship, Shaq said (I paraphrase) that he'd played with a great teammate on every team he'd been a part of, but that Wade was by far the best.

The way Shaq degrades his former teams & teammates, I wonder how long before Nash gets the 'best ever teammate' title.
