Spygate may spur rules changes

Posted: Thursday March 27, 2008 06:49AM ET

Seven months after Spygate, integrity is still a fundamental issue for NFL owners. When owners, team officials and coaches gather for the annual spring meetings in Palm Beach, Fla., on Monday, the league's image will be a key component of several issues discussed. Much of the agenda stems from Spygate, the episode in which a Patriots' employee made tapes of the Jets' defensive signals during the opening regular-season game. Spygate fallout also is evident in a proposed rule change that would allow defensive players to receive signals from the sidelines through a radio in their helmets. On offense, quarterbacks already receive radio signals from the sidelines. A similar proposal was rejected last year, getting 20 votes, short of the 24 needed. Falcons president Rich McKay, co-chairman of the competition committee, said the impetus from Spygate could help get additional votes. Other proposals include: Changing the rule on seeding in the playoffs, in part to try to avoid a team sitting regulars at the end of the season if it has already clinched its seeding. Banning players from having hair below the name tag on their backs.

It's Not!

Hell, it is easier to intercept the radio signals without being detected. I think it should be all hand signals, both offense and defense, and an embarrassing smackdown on any team dumb enough to get caught setting up video equipment aimed at the opponents' coaches.

The seeding thing won't help. No matter how you work it, a team will be faced at some point with "should I play them or sit them?"

The hair cut thing is a joke, but it is employment and any employer can have a reasonable dress code. The uniforms and visual package are part of the deliverable.

Radio signals are fir sissies....I say use E.S.P. ,and if you catch the opposing team attempting to steal those signals, make their head explode like in Scanners. Betcha the signal stealing slows down then!

You'd have to double the janitorial staff in Foxboro to clean up all the exploded Patriots' staff members. Happily, not a lot of gray goo would be anywhere. Just blood abd bone.

Spygate stories make my colon quiver.....

I support the "hair cut" rule (but only because I am jealous; I lost all mine to the male pattern baldness gene - HA!).

I think the rule should be no more Spygata stories on T&R ...

If integrity had been part of the mindset Spygate never would have happened....

Gee, headsets for the defense. Way better than my idea of defensive coordinators holding the play up on a big mark and wipe.

Ingenious!!

As did "S p e r m-Gate" (Bill Clinton and that woman with the blue dress), this tired old story will fade away....????.....????.....

Does anyone know if teams bring their own radio equipment to games or do they have equipment managers install whatever the hometeam supplies?

If they bring their own I wouldn't see to much of a problem with stealing signals as radio transmissions can be easily encrypted forcing any wannabe spies to record the waves and try to decide them, not going to happen during the span of a play.

Also, do they release which teams did not vote for the defensive headset resolution last season? That would be an interesting T&R and probably directly correlate to teams that steal hand signals.

FSUDrew, the teams are required to supply their own equipment. In addition to encrypting the transmissions, the NFL assignes the frequencies (which are not shared with the opposing team) shortly before game time. The reason the frequencies are kept secret even though the transmission is encrypted, is because without knowing the exact frequency, it makes is that much more difficult to block or scramble a team's transmissions.

Patriot Wars, I: The Empire Continues to Crumble

On the too-bright planet Reality One, Lord Belichick covers his eyes and longs for the safety and repose of the dank and dreary Delusional Prime, his home world. The rays of light have already begun to penetrate his super-strengthened alien skull, causing immense pain. Must flee Reality!

I say use "reverse methods". Let everyone spy and talk to potential free agents - but - you have to share all tapes and information with every team !!!

I have always wanted to see a player grabbed by the hair and robber of a sure long touchdown, Then it would be interesting to see if that player continued to keep his hair long.

Hey, now Belichick can boast once his career is over about how he was an innovator in the NFL and how his actions changed the game. What's next for this guy, hiring hackers to hack into NFL teams secured sites and emails? I'm glad this is what he'll be known for, for the rest of his career and life. Once I have kids and I give them the "cheaters never win" speech, this'll be a great story to go along with it. But at the same time, its getting old and I can see how its devastating Pats fans on here, they desparately want this thing to go away and fast. I feel sorry for them.

Problem is many already believe cheating is allowable. Now if thats what people believe then fine. many that have morals and repect for the game can`t see cheating to be the answer.....But how can Belichick continue his life in the NFL with this over his head? Maybe he is better off stepping down and saving waht last bit of repect he might have for himself, his family and the NFL.........I wouldnt want to be him now a days.......
