Canseco backs off Clemens claim

Before his book is even officially released, Jose Canseco has changed his story about pitcher Roger Clemens, even as Canseco sticks to his claims that Alex Rodriguez is a steroid user. In an interview with ABC's "Nightline," to be aired Thursday night at 11:35 p.m., Canseco backtracks on his claims about his friend and former teammate, telling interviewer Martin Bashir he no longer believes Clemens used steroids.

Canseco is a total P.O.S. Makes accusations but doesn't want to show proof. Changes his mind about whether Roger did use or not (guarantee money changed hands there). He's just trying to maintain his 15 minutes of fame as long as he can and doesn't care who's reputation he's damaging as long as he keeps making money and keeps his face in the publics. Someone needs to put a bullet in his head. Of course as much HGH or steroids he's done it would probably bounce off that thick empty skull of his.

'no longer believes clemens used steroids'??? I thought your book(s) were supposed to hold some sort of behind the scenes mind-blowing truth. How long is it going to be before you stop 'believing' that A-rod is on roids? Canseco needs to S.T.F.U.

On a side note, the picture above doesn't look anything like Jose....boy, those steroids can sure change a man!

March 27, 2008  07:21 AM ET

you know 3 years ago when Canseco was infront of congress, they asked him if he still thought steriods were a good idea. And if he would be willing to speak to kids about the dangers of steriods. After Canseco said yes, how did that statement go? Changes stories and statements like a person with dysentery changes underwear.

March 27, 2008  07:45 AM ET

I think the check from Clemens just cleared.

March 27, 2008  08:17 AM ET

This tidbit assures I won't even borrow Vindicated from my local library. Amazing. The one guy Clemens and his pirate lawyers have been able to intimidate effectively is one of the guys who blew the biggest whistle a few years back with that first book. Canseco has lost ALL credibility in my eyes. Next thing you know, he'll be speaking at the Republican National Convention right after Clemens...

March 27, 2008  08:18 AM ET

I love how fannation captioned the picture of Clemens incorrectly as Jose Canseco. Who cares? They're both lying, lowlife snakes anyway.

March 27, 2008  08:18 AM ET

So I guess Clemens is a movie producer now

March 27, 2008  08:24 AM ET

I thank God I am not a former boyfriend/sex partner of Madonna....

There must be something rotten about her down below somehow. She lands on some guy, uses him, tosses him and the poor sap winds up wandering the Earth making a jackass out of himself for all eternity.

She must be some kind of sexual vampire that sucks every drop of reality out of her victims and turns them into nothings.

Look up her track record. Once a guy jumps into the kipper with that ghoul he is washed up.....

March 27, 2008  08:30 AM ET

I know a lot of people like to defend Canseco as one of the first to expose steroid use, and because much of what he's said has turned out to be true.

But the above story is the reason so many people can't stomach him...he tells the truth when he thinks it'll do him some good, and he lies when he thinks it'll do him some good.

Ultimately, he's not concerned with the reality of what happened. He's concerned with the reality of book sales, and will get them any way he can.

March 27, 2008  08:32 AM ET

I love how the interviewer asks him what proof he has and he responds "now isn't the time for that?" Really? The time for proof isn't after you accused someone of something? Interesting. I wonder when is the time? This guy is a POS. He changes his story on Clemons before his book is even released. He has gotten caught in a lie saying Clemons wasn't at the party at his house. Oops. I think him and Roger have been spending too much time together and are both misremembering. This guy is a joke and is only doing this for the $$$.

March 27, 2008  08:32 AM ET

Ghostofthebabe, this isn't the Entertainment Tonight website. No one cares about Madonna.

March 27, 2008  08:36 AM ET

Yeah...blaming Madonna is just plain weird.

March 27, 2008  08:41 AM ET

Didn't mean to upset any of you Madonna fans, just was struck how her old boyfriends always seem to hit the news for lowlife activities and act like general idiots.

Also thinking I dodged a bullet when I passed on backstage passes to one of her shows.....

Yankee64, rarely do I agree with you and I enjoy positive debate with you, but on your comments here on this I am right with you about Canseco!

March 27, 2008  09:02 AM ET

Well, imagine our relief.

I think you should read more of the comments on these Canseco threads. Seems to me more people call him out as a rat, liar, money-grubber than herald him as an agent of change in the steroid crisis.

That being said, I do agree with your assesment of him; and that being said, I don't really care. I just want the season to start.

Hey, ECK. Glad we can agree on SOMETHING!!

Slinky...he's both, of course. And I wish he'd just go away, too.

Got my tix for the Stadium on Monday...can't wait!

March 27, 2008  11:28 AM ET

I think the comments about Canseco not being concerned with truth or baseball are valid here, even though not too many commentshave been in support of Canseco's actions.
I have read many commennts, over the past year, saying essentially that Canseco was telling the truth before when people called him a liar and that he has done more to clean up baseball and get this out in the open than anyone. I have marginally agreed with those statements. I have also taken the time then, and will do9 so again, to remind everyone that Canseco does not care about anything but himslf. That does not mean that his statements are false, it does mean we should look at what he says and how he says it criticaly.
Here he is making fairly unsubstantiated claims using innuendo. That does not catagorically mean that Canseco is wrong, it does mean that Canseco is not acting in a anner that we can take at face value.

If you want a good take on Canseco's ... cough, cough.... new book then check out Wallace Matthews' column from NY Newsday today at nynewsday.com
I included an excerpt from the column below but I think the whole article is worth a read. (Pay extremly fine attention to the last paragraph of the excerpt!)

"Canseco's new book has ax to grind"
Wallace Matthews
March 27, 2008

"Canseco may be the boy who cried wolf, but last time around, there really was a wolf at the door. That's why, as slimy as this messenger is, we have no choice but to take a look at the message. And considering all we have learned over the past three years from 'Game of Shadows,' a legitimate book by legitimate authors; the Mitchell Report; the congressional hearings, and the testimony of Brian McNamee and Kirk Radomski, one would have to be naive or foolish to swear that anyone in professional sports is absolutely clean.

This is less the fault of Canseco than of Bud Selig and Donald Fehr, who in their greed and amorality encouraged and abetted the flourishing of the steroid culture, compromised their game's integrity, tarnished the legacies of its greatest retired stars and cast suspicion on each and every one of their current stars. Perhaps worst of all, they created the monstrous figure of Jose Canseco, Bestselling Author."
