Why Webber chose retirement
Posted: Thursday March 27, 2008 09:39AM ET
Just two months ago, Chris Mullin and coach Don Nelson harbored hopes that Chris Webber could diversify their attack and bolster a thin frontline. But the 35-year-old had minimal impact through nine games before his surgically-repaired left knee gave out. Webber said he feared the worst after an awkward landing against the 76ers on Feb. 29, and with his knee not responding to treatment, he decided this week to call it a career. "Rehab is so hard, it's so monotonous, so boring," Webber explained. "To rehab and just be ready for the summer? I can play somewhere with my boys on a bad knee. But I really didn't want to try and rehab and come back this season because I didn't think that was possible. Plus, the way the team is playing is already great with these guys. They're already on a roll and I feel they're going to win and have a great chance in the playoffs. It's time to just let the game go and be happy with what I accomplished."

My sources say he's rich, lazy and lost interest in competing.

Report Offensive CommentI think he deserves a time-out to make up for that one he called in college that he didn't actually have.

Report Offensive CommentI'm guessing he got the veteran's minimum for joining the Warriors mid-season! Quite an awesome payday for 9 games (432 mins of actual basketball court time).
The average workday is 480mins (8 hrs x 60mins)... He's worked less than one day!!! I love pro-sports. He'd never make it in the real world hahahha

Report Offensive CommentWhat's his motive for coming back this year? More money? Then call the whole thing off and complaint about harsh rehab? Huh?

Report Offensive CommentHe chose retirement, because he can't play anymore. GS should have known better.

Report Offensive CommentWebber is a great basketball player, but he never reached his full potential in the NBA in my opinion. I wonder if he will get in the Basketball Hall of Fame because he has the numbers and an amazing college career even though Michigan cleared the record books from when he was there. The other glaring hole that everyone knows about is no NBA Championship. I think its a tough decision on whether he will get in or not!

Report Offensive CommentGSW 1 year contract
$596,244
Greece contract offered for 2 years
$10-12 million (making him the highest paid American athlete in Europe)
Greece is so lucky that Webber did not accept

Report Offensive CommentWebber recieved a pro-rated veterans minimum for the 9 games he played. During pre-season he was a sought after FA like PJ Brown. I'm sorry it didn't work out for him. Chris just didn't look very good on the floor. The only thing he could do was a little pick and pop at the top of the key and his shot was looking suspect because he couldn't get any leg into it. As a diehard warriors fan it was nice to see the whole drama that Nellie and C-Webb caused the first go round. Really the decimated the franchise for a good decade and a half. Now there's no reason to be bitter and at least Webber gave it a try and has the decency to ride off into the sunset head held high.
BTW no way he's going to HOF.

Report Offensive CommentIf any of you listen to XM radio "C-Webz" has his own show on one of the rap channels. 0% of it is music 3% was about which team he wanted to play for if he came back a few months ago. 25% was about rap gangs and him being famous with rappers and rumors of his famous friends 57% was about how all he wants to do is eat fried chicken, have unprotected sex with different girls every night and sit in his mansion driving a different car everyday and his sexual dreams that he still wants to finish. The remaining 15% was mostly either curse words that are not bleeped out cause it's XM or rap lingo that I cant understand. The sad part is it fun to listen to for a good 3 mins before you realize your wasting your time and IQ. Happy retirement Mr. Webber at least you have a radio show to fall back on now and you don't have to waste 3% of it on an actual subject like basketball anymore. It's just sad that the two biggest highlights of your career are calling a time out you didn't have and dating Tayra Banks for a month.

Report Offensive CommentC-Webb was scared more of a four-letter word (W-O-R-K) than his bum knee. He was never one to put in the "hard" work to become better. He had natural talent and never had to worry until the talent started to deteriorate.

Report Offensive Commentwith a little more heart webber could have been the best PF IMO..he was athletic, big and you got to love those big hands and he could pass, hit the outside j, 3 pointers, run the break, block shots and finish inside...there was only only one thing missing the heart to be the best and be a winner..

Report Offensive Commentbeing a little hard on c-webb, i'd say. yeah, clearly he's a guy who gets butterflies in the closing seconds. but look at his stats from that epic la-sacto series in '02....he put up huge numbers in those games. he was a good player. all kinds of guys never win a championship.

Report Offensive CommentIt's good that he and Nellie were able to resolve their differences, but he shouldn't have been resigned in the 1st place. I don't know how many times I've said it, knees don't get well.

Report Offensive CommentC-Webb seemed like a solution to the warriors major problem. veteran big man. Plus he was aware of the type of offense Nelson would run and in his younger days thrived in the open court style. Plus the money was right. It's well known he signed for a prorated veteran's minimum. It could've been worse we could have signed DJ Mbenga for the rest of the season. LA I'm looking at you.

The fact that this came out of the much maligned Webber is a testament he has matured AND has accepted his place in the basketball scene. He didnt want to mess with the chemistry the Warriors have right now. I think that is commendable.

Report Offensive CommentGuy played on one leg the last 4 years and still contributed (except for this Warrior second coming). Mind was willing but the body was not. I think he's earned the right to veto going into rehab yet again. At his advanced basketball age, he knew, and the team knew, it just wasnt worth it. Its easy for the haterade people to say he's just lazy to refuse rehabbing his knee again. Theyre not the ones who gets to spend countless hours working on a knee that will never be the same again. He just spent the last 4 years trying to see if it would work again. He just simply came to the realization that its time to hang it up.
