Red Wings plan McCarty's return
Posted: Thursday March 27, 2008 09:51AM ET
Red Wings general manager Ken Holland will be interested as anyone Friday when Darren McCarty steps onto the ice at Joe Louis Arena. McCarty will see his first game action in his return to the Wings Friday against the Blues. That was determined after Holland talked to coach Mike Babcock on the flight back Tuesday from St. Louis.

I'll be cheering for him. Hard. This guy was a beauty Red Wing in the day, and now that he's getting his off-ice issues in check, there's no reason to think he won't be effective again. Even through his issues, he always carried himself with a certain amount of class, never blaming anyone else or making excuses. McCarty is an all-around good guy and its nice to see good guys get second chances, instead of all of them going to guys like Simon and Pronger

Report Offensive CommentgoCanada, I agree with just about everything you stated. My problem with D-Mac is the way he left his wife in Calgary. The Detroit Free Press (a rag) pointed out during a lengthy D-Mac article that he left his wife with 20 grand in credit card debt and his truck payments. I also think (not sure) he left her via a letter. I guess that is between the two of them though.

Report Offensive CommentYa she said the only thing she wants is the credit cards payed off and the tattoos of him removed from her stomach. LMFAO...

Report Offensive Commentguess I missed hearing about the stuff with his wife. However, its tough to make a call on it without hearing both sides of that story. He may have been taking some serious abuse from her - mostly deserved, I guess, considering the financial problems his gambling and drinking got them in (plus the whole band thing) - and left just looking to be rid of her. I doubt he's the only one who did wrong in that divorce

Report Offensive CommentHe'll be surrounded by some good buds and good veteran players in Detroit, maybe that's all he needs to get back on track?

Report Offensive CommentThe Detroit Free Press (again, a RAG) interviewed the wife for their story. As previously stated by Peter (lol) the only thing she wants from Mac is the debts he ran up paid off. She is not looking for any extra money in the divorce. D-Mac stated the reason that he left Calgary was to reconnect with his kids from his first marriage. That in and of itself is great, but clear up your business in Calgary before leaving. Again, that is between the two of them. I will be on my feet cheering the first goal he scores. Bentley is right on....Draper has already taken him under his wing.

Great job D-Mac at turning your life around and getting back to the NHL.

Report Offensive CommentHere's to you Mac. I'll be watching for sure. Hope he makes things right with his wife, though.
He was up here a few years ago and did a good job of skating and spending time with the kids in the area during their hockey practices.
Does this mean Grinder will be getting back together too????Rock on!

Report Offensive Commentdo you guys not remember when McCarty was a Wing? he was a figher...which was great...had some nice ones against the AVS...then he scored that awesome goal in the finals and decided he was no longer a fighers...and guess what...he was pretty useless.
memo to everyone....he wasn't good!
sturg1dj | 03/27/08, 03:19 PM
Report Offensive CommentAbsolutely, sturg. As much as I hate Darren McCarty's guts, I hope everything works out for him. As I've said before, he ranks number three on the all-time list of Red Wings I Hate, right behind Scotty Bowman and Kris Draper. I hope he can get his life straightened out, though. That's as far as my good will toward the Detwat Red Wings goes.

I felt it was prudent to point out that, it was the other way around. Bowman was right behind the players. The fans were right behind him, that being the case, then I could certainly understand your animosity...at least half the time.

Report Offensive Commentwtnelson whats up?, why such the hatred?, you know there's an old saying in sports that if opposing fans hate your team, it's a sure sign your team must be doing good!, that's not hatred, thats jealousy!

Report Offensive Commentwtnelson...I have to ask....what is it about Draper that you hate? The guy is about vanilla as they come. I could certainly understand if you said Chelios or Hasek, etc. But Draper?
ks | 03/27/08, 10:10 PM
Report Offensive CommentIt's just a Colorado thing. We hate Kris Draper. No real reason, but he's always been an easy target since the Lemieux hit. The Avs flagship station in Denver had a mock soap opera in which the cast included Kris Draper as "The Crying Baby". Nobody can really explain why he's always been on the list of hated Red Wings. I don't even understand it because he is a great guy, but the list is set in stone. There is nothing I can do about it. And wingsfan, say what you want, you obviously don't know about rivalries in sports, and don't tell me that the Avs/Wings rivalry is dead. If you think that, you've obviously never been to an Avs/Wings game. The teams still hate each other, especially now that Foote and McCarty are back. I still hate the Oakland Raiders, and they are the suckiest team in football, and there is nothing to be jealous of. The Red Wings are a classy organization and always put a great product on the ice, and because of that I have tremendous respect for them, but I will always hate them.

Report Offensive Commentwtnelson, being a Av's fan I see your point now. I can see your hating D-mac for his role in the Wings-Av's rivalry. But all Draper did was have his face smashed to bits with a cheap shot by Claude. That is what makes a rivalry so much fun and I hope the Av's hang on to their 8th seed. What a great first round match-up.
