Texas unaware of QB transfer

Texas coach Mack Brown said after spring practice Wednesday he's unaware of any desire to transfer by backup quarterbacks Sherrod Harris of Arlington Bowie, who will be a sophomore in the fall, or G.J. Kinne of Gilmer, who will be a redshirt freshman. Internet message boards have been rife with rumors that one or both is seriously considering transferring because junior-to-be Colt McCoy and sophomore-to-be John Chiles of Mansfield Summit remain the top two quarterbacks. Texas also has a commitment for the fall of 2009 from Garrett Gilbert of Lake Travis, a top national quarterback prospect.

Sherrod is a good talent, but he didn't look too happy at one Spring Practice, even when Vince tried to cheer him up.

Report Offensive CommentIf Texas is smart, they'd go with Chiles next year in a Vince Young- type offense. Colt is highly overrated, as he proved with his play last year. And, the only way Mack's gonna win another title is with a running QB.

Report Offensive CommentColt is not overrated just had a decent season. He had one of the best freshman seasons ever. Cant stand it when people talk out there a**. We don't need negative fans like you. Show some faith. Yes Chiles should be incorporated into the office but why would we bench one of the best QB's in the nation. "Only way Macks going to win" What are you 12. We are a National Power house with some of the greatest athletes in the nation. Where is your faith?

Report Offensive CommentSON, YOU HAVE TO THINK WITH YOUR MIND, NOT YOUR HEART! DON'T KID YOURSELF. COLT HAD A HORRIBLE SEASON LAST YEAR. HOW MANY INTERCEPTIONS? HIS DECISION-MAKING WAS TERRIBLE AND HE WAS TIMID. IF HE CONTINUES, MACK SHOULD GO WITH CHILES, EARLY. IN 1997 WE WON THE BIG 12 CHAMPIONSHIP. WHAT TYPE OF QB? IN 2005 WE WON IT ALL! WHAT TYPE OF QB? HMMM......

Report Offensive CommentYou guys are yout of your minds. Colt McCoy is better than a average quarterback. If you paid attention last year you would have noticed that he had no one to throw the ball to for most of the games. Sweed was out for the season and Pittman was banged up most of the year also. That and the offensive line wasnt healthy until the Holiday Bowl. Texas has some amazing recievers and a rebuilt offensive line coming into this season. If Colt is still throwing as many picks as TD's after a few games, make the move then.

Report Offensive CommentTexas fan said it all. You so called coach fans are the one thinking with emotion. Blame it all on the QB.I bet you where calling for Mock when Vince wasn't doing that well at the beginning of the season. I bet you called for Applewhite though he never won a big game. He is going to have a stellar season and you fair weathers will be eating your words.
Agrippa | 03/27/08, 07:28 PM
Report Offensive CommentI'm not even a fan of Texas. In fact, I absolutely hate their consitently overrated team. Just thought I'd offer my advice. And we'll see just how great your wonderful Colt performs this year. I'm sure he'll be up for the Heisman ;-) And by the way Agrippa, don't you think Mack should have gone with Applewhite back then instead of Chris (my daddy played NFL ball) Simms?

Report Offensive CommentAnd I would never call for an athlete like Vince Young to be benched. Sorry brother.

Report Offensive Comment"I bet you called for Applewhite though he never won a big game" What warped parallel universe do you live in?
VY was "The Man" but in all fairness he had the good fortune to operate behind one of the best offensive lines in UT history. That line was passed on to young Colt his freshman year and the kid turned in a record performance. That line then moved on to the NFL leaving Colt playing behind what may have been one of the worst offensive lines in recent years and his performance was not very good. I believe that the lions share of blame for the poor performance is the Offensive Line Coach who seems to consistently get the very least from the talent he has to work with and the only exception has been when the talent was so great that they managed to win despite is efforts.

Report Offensive Commentcasasims, u hit on it well. Colt in his freshman year played with not only the best line in Texas history, but one of the best in College Football history. And if any of u so called fans had watched all the games last year, u would realize that the vast majority of Colt's interceptions were due to tipped passes at the line.
The pressure was constant early in the season, it wasn't until the running game got going and the young linemen got good experience. Combine that with Sweed being hurt, Pittman being suspeneded and hurt, Shipley starting out hurt, and only Cosby with sufficent playing time, AS WELL as the offensive scheme early in the year being pass-first even with Charles there, and Colt was destined to have a bad year.
This season could have been unbelievable with Muschamp, if Charles and Finley had returned. But the offensive line is much better, and if anyone understands how the game works, u would realize it is easier to succeed with a great offensive line and a lack of weapons, then great weapons and a bad line. And next year will be fun to watch, with all but Dockery and Cosby returning to the offense, and colt a senior with experinced young weapons, we will see this year and the next if texas is "overrated".

Report Offensive CommentI'm not going o get into this. On a thread you want to throw down we can in regards to Simms and Applewhite. "Chris (my daddy played NFL ball) Simms?" You don't become the top rated Offensive player in the nation coming out of high school because who your dad is. Sim's did not love up to expectations which is why everyone was so hard on him. Applewhite had none. He lost to New Mexico State and Stanford. If Simms would have done that he would have been beaten to death
Agrippa | 03/28/08, 03:51 PM
Report Offensive CommentLot of tipped passes for Colt last year, as previously mentioned--but that doesn't answer for his fumbling problem. If Colt can hang onto ball and find consistent, reliable target, horns will be hard to beat.
"consistently over rated"? what planet are you on? Texas loses one game and drops 12 spots in poll; how many spots does USC drop when they lose to Stanford or Cal, four? Jeez. Ask Arizona State how over rated Texas was last year. And they did beat "the greatest team ever assembled in the history of college athletics" for the title--how over rated is that?
Applewhite so much better than Simms? Give it a rest. Can't even answer to that except to say Major was great, but Simms clearly better. All Simms did was win 30 some games (but lose a few big ones, but then again, I didn't see him giving up 300 rushing yards oto OU).
Mack said it best: Simms is immensely talented, extremely rich, and a good looking kid--people are jealous. (not word for word, but he did say something to that effect). that being said, he hasn't played for Texas for a few years now, let's move on.

Report Offensive CommentNeed I bring up the Big 12 Championship game in Dallas when Simms played so horribly in the 1st half, that even Mack had to pull the Golden Boy? Sure, he may have been more talented and a better physical specimen than Applewhite, but he sure did have a knack for choking in the big games. As I recall, Applewhite came into the game and his 1st pass was a TD. He almost led UT back, if Simms hadn't have dug the team such a whole with several turnovers. And I'm pretty sure there were plenty of Texas fans there that night that would like to have "beaten him (Simms) to death" as you so elequently wrote in your last post.

Report Offensive Commentthis is why i never understand why these kids pick these school knowing hey got no chance to play when 3 other QB's are on the team and anyone can start a game. I for one would go to a school that needs me not a place i sit the bench for a few year not knowing if i even get a shot at the starting job
