MLB, union close to steroids deal
With all 30 major league teams about to begin the regular season, the players association and the commissioner's office continued efforts Thursday to reach an agreement on the Mitchell report's recommendations on performance-enhancing drugs. As of a few days ago, the commissioner's office and the union were close to a deal in which none of the active players linked to banned substances in the report would be disciplined. The union would accept increased year-round drug testing and other measures, according to two lawyers and a baseball executive who were familiar with the negotiations but were not authorized to discuss them.

They are all doing steroids. All of them, becasue there is way too much money involved with MLB and por sports accross the boards. Hell I would cut off my baseballs if you gave me only $10 million dollars, so it is no big deal. It is all about greed. Greed is good.

Wish we could all agree to a massive FAN BAN. If no one showed up opening day there would be alot of players, owners and management, that would have to buy clean undies.

I'm probably gonna get someone's panties in a bunch over this comment, but I am so sick and tired of the Union. Don't get me wrong here. I am all for unions. I agree with what they stand for and with their purpose. However in this instance it has become mini-government. It has grown and become more and more powerful, bringing along with it it's own politics, and what does that do? It hurts those it was originally made to protect. Those clean players (and I am assuming somewhere in the league, there is still SOMEONE left) who really want to play the game. Your 'everyday' pro ball player. It instead protects those dirty pieces of crap that have caused this whole bomb to blow up. And as far as doing what it was meant to do....isn't a union put into place to be the voice of the people and to protect the group in the face of wrong doing on the part of their employer? I ask you, who's in the wrong here?

At_Home: Exactly!
Anyone who reads this article will have to tell me what info, outside of the item that testing would be year round, the article divulges that means anything to any of us. Come back when there is some hard news to report. Otherwise both sides seem to be just making noise to appease Congress and the outrage that some of us fans have been expressing. I see nothing of consequence mentioned in this article at all. Please, do not waste time posturing and preening for the public, there is real work that is needed to be done in this area, MLB. AND please, if an independent testing body is not on the table then this whole situation is much ado about nothing. Just some noise with out action.

Agree 4192. No news in this at all! Who thought the players would actually be disciplined? NOONE. Who thoughtthe union would Not accept increased year round drug testing as a result of this fiasco? NOONE. My God, are people really being paid to write these pearls of wisdom? I'm close to leaving Fannation. Too thin too often.

So all we need to do is highjack the thread just like we did in the "Yanks for Sale" thread. :)) If fannation won't supply us with the fodder for a good conversation then we ourselves will make the coversation :D

4192, yeah, like I tried to do on the ridiculously lame Bonds thread. My last post referenced Clemens in a poor attempt at that but alas, noone wants to read that one either so it'll die too. Later.

LIKE I SAID BEFORE, THIS WHOLE STERIOD ISSUE IS A BIG FAT JOKE. I BET YOU PLAYERS FROM THE RUTH ERA AND SO ON WERE USING SOME TYPE OF JUICE TO GET JACKED BEFORE A GAME. MY OPINION IS THAT STERIODS DOES NOT AND WILL NOT EVER IMPROVE A BATTERS EYE-HAND COORDINATION. YES THE BALL WILL GO FURTHER. SO FOR THOSE BATTERS WHO DON'T HAVE THE HOMERUN POWER WILL AND FOR THOSE BATTERS WHO DO HAVE THE HOMERUN POWER THEY WILL JUST SMASH THE **** OUT OF THE BALL. SO IF THE UNION IS GOING TO BANN STERIOD USE THEN THEY NEED TO BANN INHALERS FOR ASTHMA, BECAUSE INHALERS ARE CONSIDER A STERIOD. INHALERS DO IMPROVE A PLAYERS PERFORMANCE.THE UNION ALSO HAS TO MAKE IT CLEAR WHAT THEY CONSIDER A STERIOD TO BE AND MAKE SURE THAT THERE IS NO LOOPHOLES.

GBrett your opinion on steroids is wrong. Juice helps increase strength, which increases bat speed, which can allow a hitter to hit a ball not just farther, but to actually get around on one that he might not without juice.
Regarding the original topic, what is the point of continually increasing the penalties if you won't make anyone actually have to suffer them?
