Jagr considering Russian league
Posted: Friday March 28, 2008 08:28AM ET
It might not be on anybody else's list of global hot spots. But Jaromir Jagr has been unabashed in his affection for the southwestern Siberian city of Omsk and up front about his desire to one day play there again. Next week, Jagr will get the chance to lay the groundwork for just such a return - or, at least, continue a dialogue that never has been interrupted - when he meets with Anatoly Bardin, the new general manager for Avangard-Omsk of the Russian Super League.

Report Offensive CommentFronm New York City to Freezyerassov, Siberia. This sounds like a great plan. Anyone consider this a negotiation ploy? Anyone? Bueler?

Report Offensive CommentThat is what the Russian league will consist of, 2nd rate or washed up players that can't hack it in the NHL.

Report Offensive Commentit'll come down to money for this guy, like it always has. He realizes he's not going to draw the same kind of coin this off season as he is accustomed to, and likely figures the Russians will pay him more to play there - they might even overpay to get him now while he can still play, as opposed to waiting another couple years when he'll have nothing left at all. Something tells me an NHL team will make it worth his while to stay, but that'll all come down to how he performs in the playoffs. If he's garbage, he may as well cross the pond because nobody over here is going to put up with his drama if he can't produce

Report Offensive CommentThis is classic paying for the name on the back of the jersey. There's no way Jagr will reach his incentives and will be lucky to be given a similiar contract next season anywhere, especially New York which is tight on the cap as is and are pretty lucky Jagr never reached many of his bonuses laid out in his incentive ridden contract. This guy used to one of the most dominating presences in the game.......in 1991,92,93....what do you think the Ruskies are tryin to do, fill seats in there arena

Report Offensive CommentHis max here should be 3 million. If he cant "live" on that.Oh well.Maybe he can join Cashin and play against them. They'll market it like a Crosby vs Ovechkin type deal.Sadly nobody will care.
bostongm | 03/28/08, 12:50 PM
Report Offensive CommentIf they really want him over there for more than his name...They better convince Mario to go along with him as part of the deal. Heck, if they could do that, then even I would tune in.
Baun-ded | 03/28/08, 01:04 PM
Report Offensive CommentI think he could still draw $5 million if he plays his cards right. If he can have a good playoff, he's set, but barring that, he still has SOME leverage. There are a number of teams out there that need scoring, desperately. If he can get a bidding war going - and teams like Dallas, for instance, are desperate enough for his services/scoring potential, or, as Baun-ded said, for his name. A team like Atlanta could maybe use a marquee, HOF name to sell some tickets before they have to move in a couple years. Otherwise, he may as well go over there, but something tells me they don't baby their players in Siberia the way they do in Manhatten

Wow I never get why people hate him so much. Especially teams that he has never been affiliated with--or helped win Cups. You might as well say "I HATE GREATNESS, WAAAAH!"
OtherOne81 | 03/28/08, 03:24 PM
Report Offensive CommentWhat a fall from greatness. Jagr was one of the funnest guys to watch when he was in his prime. Unfortunately, his Washington years were past his prime. For a long time there, though, with him and Mario, there's nobody in the world that wanted to play the Pens. Good luck in the frozen tundra, Jaromir, and I don't mean Wisconsin!

Report Offensive CommentOther One81,
People hate him because he's a freakin' drama queen. Aside from that he had a HOF career.

Report Offensive CommentGive the guy a playmaker who has some chemistry together with him and he'll be able for another 100 points season, easily. It's extremely obvious that he miss Michael Nylander alot. Nylander is a guy who can hold the puck, dizzy up a defenseman or two and then put it on the blade for Jagr.
Nah, we'll probably see more of him unless the Russkies caughs up 7-8 millions.

Report Offensive Commenthe's still way better than average even though he acts like a princess and has absolutely no confidence when shooting the puck. i could care less what this guy decides to do at the end of the season. better for the rangers if he goes to russia. with shanahan most likely gone as well as malik, jagr, and maybe roszival, the rangers will probably have an even busier off season than last year. without jagr that means more spending money.
MMantle7 | 03/29/08, 01:46 AM
Report Offensive Commentthe best part of this is that he wears number 68 to honor the czech's Prague Spring rebellion of 1968, which ended when the russians rolled in with their tanks. and now he wants to go there and play. kind of ironic, that's all.
