I mean, Ryan Howard wanted 10 mil & they went to arbitration w/ him, cuz they only wanted to pay him 7, that was ONLY 3 mil, but they didn't want to do it! And Hamels wanted $750 thousand & they only gave him $500 .. Idk, i guess it makes sense to underpay your good players ....................?

I can understand it with Hamels. He is very injury prone and they don't want to pony up anything yet without seeing where is going to be this year. But Howard needs to get paid. We CANNOT let this man walk in 2011. That would be bad on so many levels. But sadly, I see that being the case.

I'm sorry- is there a club not looking for pitching? This has to be one of the most redundant headlines I've read in awhile. That's like saying "the Tigers are looking for Relief help." Wow! Never knew that. I never would have thought Philly was looking for pitching until now... thank-you slow news day...

the phillies had a chance to improve their pitching staff by adding kyle lohse for 4 million dollars and deemed him to expensive, plus we have cy young hopeful kris benson, fresh off a year on the DL, waiting in the wings. The phillies ownership group is wealthier than the yanks or red sox's, but cheaper than the marlins.

I've heard Byung Yung Kim is available. No "upside" but very cheap !!!

They are going to need more pitching to be able to win the NL East division.

It wasn't that we deemed him to expensive, we made an offer to him for 3 years and 21 mil. He turned it down. It's about the point he made saying he could get more elsewhere and it ended up costing him 17 Mil. It's a matter of principle.

I've got a good trade for you. Utley for Fuentes. Otherwise, no deal. We're happy with what we have here in CO. Anyway, if you listen to that moron Tim Kurkjian, Philly is gonna win the World Series because, he says, they have the best lineup in the NL (which explains why they got pounded in the postseason last year), so why should they add anything?

They do have the most "potent" lineup in the league....They have 20+ HR guys from leadoff up until the seven spot....Victorino and Ruiz/Coste being the exceptions....but if Werth and Jenkins pan out....they could contribute 20-30 HRs combined....This team will drive in runs....

Offense aside....can the pitching (outside Myers and Hamels) keep the ball in the park...?

I'd take the Rox lineup against em. 20+ homers from 2-6 and Jayson Nix may contribute the same this year. Plus we have Ryan Spilborghs and Ian Stewart on the bench, and our pitching is better. The Phils are gonna be good again though, but I just don't think that they can matchup against the Mets this year, barring injuries.

Like isn't everyone looking for pitching??? Come on we all know, and I've talked about this in other posts, PITCHING IS THIN, I'm not talking about hitting is better so pitching only appears to look worse. Every team needs the same number of pitchers as position players on their roster! Like say a 25 man roster: 11 to 13 are pitchers, same number for ALL position players. I remember Jose Canseco trying to pitch for a team in need, (California?) knuckel ball I think, through his arm out after one inning, what an arse...

Phillies would be better off if they released Helms, and Eaton, but they won't because they are penny pinchers and always have been.
