Justin Boren left the Michigan football team only a few days ago. It didn't take long for his father, Mike, to start fielding calls from coaches inquiring about the All-Big Ten honorable mention lineman. "We haven't talked to anyone," Mike Boren said Thursday about transfer possibilities. "We probably got 100 phone calls from schools, I-AA to Notre Dame. One of the potential schools he could consider is Ohio State, a finalist when he came out of high school in Pickerington, Ohio.

As a fan of Michigan, I am more devastated about the story talking about why he left than I would be if he went to a rival...

March 28, 2008  08:59 AM ET

Yep here we go....I can see it now, all the UM fans saying " He wasnt good enough for us, so I'm sure he'll fit right in at OSU..."

March 28, 2008  09:07 AM ET

But I agree with Bim, anytime a kid sites those reasons as to why he left that spells trouble, and dont get me wrong there is nothing I like more than watching Michigan lose, but to see a program fall from grace would be a sad thing

This doesn't sound good for the Mich. football team.. Loosing their freshman QB and now others are leaving! And Pryer going to the Buckeys. One thing you could ALWAYS say about Carr, he was a class act.. Doesn't sound like West Virginia's old coach is going to be!!!

March 28, 2008  09:38 AM ET

A sad time for Michigan may be upon us. I pray not. If Rodriguez is gonna bring down the standards of the program, he better win some games that's all I have to say. I think RR will walking a tight rope VERY soon.

March 28, 2008  09:45 AM ET

If all these coaches can switch schools anytime they want I say leave the kid alone !!!

I don't think thats the point, noone is saying he cant go, they are saying how odd it is that another good player for UM is leaving, and that the RR staff is pretty much to blame.

March 28, 2008  10:17 AM ET

As a lifelong UofM fan I think it is a very bad sign when players are saying why they left the program. Losing Boren will definitely be a huge loss for the program. I honestly think it will be as big a slap in the face if he goes to Ohio St though. To say Ohio St is a better place to be than Michigan is tough for Michigan to take. Right now, as a fan I might have to agree with him though.

Him possibly choosing Ohio St has to be tough, considering his father played for Bo at Michigan and his mother was a track athlete for UofM. If the values of the program have dropped that far already in 3 months I am very very worried.

Remember though, one thing may keep him from going to another Big Ten school. The Big Ten apparently has a more strict transfer rule in place. A student athlete may not transfer from one Big Ten school to another and receive an athletic scholarship at the new school (unless waived by the Big Ten which usually only happens in extreme circumstances which this is not).

March 28, 2008  10:31 AM ET

I am even ok with losing someone like Mallett. Not because I didnt want him, but I could understand the reasons for leaving (not fitting the system) and understanding those reasons. The reasons Boren left are a much larger reason for concern.

March 28, 2008  10:35 AM ET

Michigan would not release him to go to Ohio State and even if they did, the kid quit because he didn't want to work, I don't want people like that on the team. The mentality that we will coddle these kids through 4 or 5 years of mediocre results is over with. I'm tired of doing less with more, it's time to do more with more and those who stay will be champions.

Yeah. Those standards were in full bloom at home against Appalichian State last year.

But Im sure he would have been an excellent center for your team had he stayed. You are treating him just like you did with Pryor....exactly the response I thought I'd see...

March 28, 2008  10:43 AM ET

Boren wasn't exactly clear as to why he left. Saying it's about family values or lack of it is a bit cryptic. It might just all boil down to the fact that Boren didn't like how he was treated (ie being yelled at or belittled) during practice.

RR is definitely a different breed than Carr. Different coaching philosophies and different approach on how to handle the kids. Obviously, Boren isn't accustomed to being hounded by coaches. I don't think that makes him soft. It's just a shame to have to have it come to this.

Bo was the same. He knew when to be harsh but when to pat a kid on the back. I don't know if RR is the same.

Regardless, it is what it is and the team has to move on. Boren's departure might have a silver lining as it will make others step up and realize their true potential, something the Carr regime wasn't always able to extract from their recruits but where we do know RR and his staff can.

I wish Boren the best, even if he does decide to go to the Dark Side where they poop in styrofoam coolers before kick off.

Boren was quoted as saying how hard the practices were only 10 days ago. He stated all the lineman had a hard time running back to the line as required in RR's no huddle system. Now 10 days later he comes up with this "family values" reason to quit. I certainly don't know for sure why he quit , but I find it awfully suspicious he quits 10 days after the "too hard" comment and now gives a reason that was never even alluded to earlier. Did RR's team atmoshere change THAT much in 10 days? Anyway, he is a very good player and I wish him luck with his next team.

March 28, 2008  10:57 AM ET

I think it is entirely possible that Boren will wind up w/ the Suckeyes. If J. Damon and Roidger Clemens can go from the Red Sox to the Yankees then anything is possible. Then again, Damon and Clemens were given Millions of dollars to switch sides and I know the Suckeyes wont give Boren even half that much.

March 28, 2008  11:01 AM ET

I knew the Mich. fans would turn on Boren just like they did Pryer when they couldn't recruit him.. you guys need to man up and accept things instead of making excuses and degrading the ones you once thought were GODS gifts to Mich..

March 28, 2008  11:03 AM ET

If you want to go to the extreme, Boren might have left the team citing family values because UM won't offer his lil bro Zach a scholi.

Far fetched? Maybe but then again who knows...

Do you think he might actually go to Notre Dame (ie. the dark side).?

March 28, 2008  11:07 AM ET

Sorry, I forgot there are a few dark sides competing as the #1 dark side, but there is only one dark side where they use styrofoam containers to poop in and that's in Columbass!

I dunno the extent of the grievance between the boren's and RR. If it's as bad as I think it might be, then I think Boren will go to OSU as a poke in RR's eye.
