Loria makes peace with Girardi

While the Yankees took batting practice late yesterday afternoon, Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria went behind the cage to exchange a handshake and a pleasant minute with Joe Girardi. It was the first time the two had spoken since Loria fired Girardi following the 2006 season, Girardi's only year as manager of the Marlins. That dismissal ended what had become a stormy season together. Loria had broken up the team shortly after hiring Girardi after telling the new manager that such a deconstruction would not occur. The animosity surfaced publicly when Loria was screaming at an umpire from behind the Florida dugout and Girardi told his owner to shut up. Loria wanted to fire him there. He ended up getting talked out of it, but Girardi's fate was sealed even in a season in which he won the NL Manager of the Year.

The Marlins dump players so they can save the buck. Plain and simple.

He learned how to burn pitchers out from Torre. I would imagine you could hear fans sneeze when only 400 of them show up for a game.

shake hands and move on ... Girardi got the best of all this after all

March 29, 2008  12:35 PM ET

Loria's firing of this egomaniac was a good move. Plain and simple to those of us outside of the Yankee fandom.

March 29, 2008  01:28 PM ET

Well one thing is for sure. And I'm really not sure what it is, so I'm just gonna sit over here quietly. You won't even know I'm here.

Shhh...

March 29, 2008  01:41 PM ET

Giradi should have knocked him out! Loria lied to his face, threw him under the bus every chance he got and talked smack to the press...Loria's a cheap bum who should be running the local 5 n' dime, not a big league ball club...

March 29, 2008  07:01 PM ET

Girardi shouldn't care. He's coaching somewhere else. He moved on long ago.

March 29, 2008  08:55 PM ET

I lived in Miami then. Neither man showed humility, but Loria made the wrong move to fire him. Plain and simple

March 29, 2008  09:36 PM ET

Loria is an idiot and should NOT be allowed to own an MLB team.

March 29, 2008  10:46 PM ET

Loria did the wrong thing by firing him, because Girardi was a good manager and knew how to handle his ballclub. It turned out fine for Girardi, as he is probably managing where he wants to most. Its good that they made friends, but it doesn't really mean anything.

There's too much peace in sports today, Joe should have kneed him in the groin! That's the way I handle things.

hey EastCoastKeith -- see you in October when Girardi is managing in the World Series and Loria is watching from the cheap seats.

Jeffrey Loria ruined the Montreal Expos before moving to Miami to start destroying the Marlins.
What a great guy !
