Is Blue Jays GM on hot seat?

He was not Paul Godfrey's first choice. Or his second, or third. As J.P. Ricciardi went about his business this spring, the general manager of the Toronto Blue Jays was asked one day whether he thought his job was in jeopardy after six years without a playoff berth. "Nobody's told me this year is bigger than any other year," Ricciardi said. "I've never heard from anybody that my job's on the line."

J.P. has a big mouth but he plays in a tough division and his players always get hurt. Scott Rolen is the latest and who knows if and when BJ Ryan will ever play a full season. His boss has given him a ton of money to work with and he has failed to make the play-offs.

He has done alot more in the past few years . But being in the AL East doesn't help matters. If we can stay injury free I like our chances. I do say though the patience is starting to get thin

I believe Ricciardi is a decent baseball guy, it is tough to compete against the behemoths in his division. He has assembled a nice young pitching staff. Injuries have killed him with guys like Halladay, Wells, Glaus hurt in recent years. They don't have the payroll to make up for major losses. I believe his leash is getitng shorter though.

I heard Dan Duquette has booked a flight to Toronto !!!

Other teams have done well in MLB with smaller payrolls. Some of his moves have not panned out but the guy is doing a fairly good job.

He should be on the hot seat if he isn't.

he looks like a guy from the Sopranos. Somebody is going to get wacked

"Nobody has told me this year is any different from any other year". And they shouldn't have to! Typically in sports, common knowledge would indicate that if you don't perform well, you get axed. Of course it isn't any different from any other year. He should be on the hot seat.

Of course he is on the hot seat. He is in the toughest division in baseball, but that still doesn't change the fact that he has had a job for a lot of years and has yet to make the playoffs. I would be a little surprised if he was still the gm next year if the jays miss the playoffs this season. Its not that he has done a bad job, its just that he hasn't done a great job.

I don't see a hot seat anywhere. If the team has one of the highest payrolls & can't make the playoffs, then he's on the hot seat...but until then...

March 29, 2008  10:49 PM ET

he is playing in a really tough division, but his team is still expected to compete. If what he is doing isn't going to get them there with the payroll that they have, then they should try to someone who can try and turn them around despite the payroll deficit that they face from the Yankees and Red Sox.

YOUR FIRED

He's a bad GM, plain and simple.

My lasting memories of JP will be his quote that "it's not lying if we know the truth" in reference to BJ Ryan's previously hidden shoulder injury last spring, and how he embarassed Carlos Delgado a few years back after Carlos wouldn't waive his no trade. If you conduct yourself like a boor, it tends to overshadow everything else you accomplish. Oh right, and what has he accomplished anyways?!?

March 30, 2008  11:37 AM ET

"Other teams that have done better with smaller payrolls," do not compete against the Yanks and Red Sox payroll. Put the Jays in any other division and they would not only be competing but winning. I think he has built a good team, the minor leagues are starting to look better, and this will be the year that they will be in it to the end.

Why do the posts from the New Y-oink fans seems so retarded? He's not bad ... what he's not so far is lucky.
