K-Rod expects to leave Angels

Opening Day might be a point of no return for the Angels and closer Francisco Rodriguez, but neither side is willing to say so at this point. Rodriguez can become a free agent after this season and has made it known he expects to test the market. In the meantime, he and his agent say they are not interested in having negotiations for a contract extension be an ongoing endeavor once the season starts. "Right now, we'll wait it out until the season is over," said Paul Kinzer, Rodriguez's agent. "Normally, I don't like to do that (negotiate during the season). It's tough on the player." But Kinzer said he has "absolutely not" given the Angels a deadline or ultimatum to sign Rodriguez before the season starts or watch him leave as a free agent next fall. Rodriguez conceded Saturday that seems to be the likely outcome. "Everything's headed that way," he said. "But there's going to be six long months of the season and I can't predict what's going to happen in one week or one month or six months."

Can you imagine the trade value of K-Rod in midseason? The Angels could sign him between now and then, or consider their options at that time. Closers are overrated.

The heir apparent to Mariano...once he tests the market, it'll be tough for the Angles to record the save. Pay the man! His pride has been stung and now he's got a vendetta to prove the club wrong. He'll do that by taking the most money and jumping ship.

He'll look good in the new Yankee Stadium next year.

Yes, K-Rd would look awesome in Yankee pinstripes.

March 30, 2008  11:46 AM ET

cubs all the way. woody will likely be back in the rotation. dempster will likely be inept as a starter.

March 30, 2008  12:10 PM ET

These pitchers who want to "wait until the end of the season" are "rolling the dice" with their arms and future. K-Rod only has to look in his own clubhouse to see how quickly a pitcher's ( Escobar ) arm can betray him !!!

March 30, 2008  12:19 PM ET

He will resign with the Angels, wait and see

March 30, 2008  12:43 PM ET

All the dulusional Yankee fans that think every good free agent would "look good in pinstripes" must have forgotten that the Yankees just signed their own aging closer to a three year $45M contract.

I agree 100%!!!!!

March 30, 2008  01:04 PM ET

He could make some big bucks on the market and he knows it.Just offer him a long term contract angels!

March 30, 2008  01:15 PM ET

We offered K-Rod a deal last year... If I remember right... It was a good offer... He decided to decline... We should offer him fair market value... But we should NOT overpay to keep him... If we can't get a deal done by mid-year... Then we should trade him... It's not like we don't have arms in the Minors... Pluse we had 2 other guys we let go...(Jenks and Turnbow)... If he wants to sign elsewhere... Happy Trails

Hed look great in pinstripes, and Manny will look great hitting walk off bombs against him against the Hankees.

March 30, 2008  01:43 PM ET

Too bad the Yanks have Mo for the next 3 years.

March 30, 2008  01:50 PM ET

But after this year Rivera will only be there 2 years, and i bet with some talking to and a lil cash, the yankees could get K-Rod to set him up. The yankees should also get Texeira after this season, and make a run at CC Sabathia. It should b a fun offseason for the yanks.

March 30, 2008  01:52 PM ET

Haha i just noticed...A-Rod and K-Rod...he has to come to NY now

March 30, 2008  01:52 PM ET

"Normally, I don't like to do that (negotiate during the season). It's tough on the player."

No doubt. Must be rough not knowing the exact obscene number of millions you will make. How does he even get out of bed in the morning?

March 30, 2008  01:53 PM ET

You are right since every good free agent goes to the Yankees, especially lately. KRod sets up for Mo about the same time as Gisele stops by to play motorboat with me.

March 30, 2008  02:04 PM ET

Well lately the yanks havnt tried to do anything in free agency. For the last two years the talent on the market has been down, and they have decided to work from in the farm system. But with Jason Giambi, Andy Pettite, Johnny Damon, and possibly abreus contract all coming off the yanks books this year, they will be the biggest players in the fre agent market at the end of this season.

But keep acting like you know something

March 30, 2008  03:04 PM ET

How bout K-rod to the Tigers they have a shakey pen and could put Todd Jones in the setup role.

March 30, 2008  03:29 PM ET

Well, I guess that empty locker next Rivera will have K-ROD's name on it.

Tough words coming from a guy who just put the K-Rod / A-Rod thing together.
