Seattle FC say they are at an "advanced" stage of a deal to sign Thierry Henry. The Barcelona striker has spoken in the past of his liking for the USA and after a difficult season in Spain could be open to a move. Seattle are a new MLS franchise who will play their inaugural season in 2009.

It's not April Fool's Day yet is it?

March 30, 2008  11:17 AM ET

Nope, it's not.

This rumor has been out there for about 3 weeks now. Only, 3 weeks ago, it was rumored that Henry would not come until Seattle's second season. Now it looks like Seattle will get him right away in '09, which would be a real coup.

I hate to do this, but look back at Beckham. Everyone knew he was going to the MLS. But everyone expected Becks to wait until he was 36 or 37. But he came here early.

Henry is doing the exact same thing. And it's going to make A LOT of Europeans mad again.

I love it. One day (we can only dream), these guys will be coming even earlier, in the middle of their prime.

Drew Carrey is emptying his pockets.

I guess they decided on Seattle FC. I like the Sounder better. Or even SC. Even though this is a European/South American sport, this is still America. It's called soccer here, so why are we naming a team Seattle Football Club?

If they wanted to name it AC or AS, they should name the basketball team they get after the Sonics move AS or AC Seattle as well as the soccer team. People would riot, but it would work out well.

March 30, 2008  11:37 AM ET

Also, this would be huge. The biggest part about this would be a small market getting a big name, which is a good sign for teams like Columbus and Kansas City.

March 30, 2008  12:35 PM ET

No way. I don't believe it will happen.

March 30, 2008  12:55 PM ET

crazy if its true. but i doubt he would sign a contract for something so far out. his woes in europe could turn around pretty quickly. and he wouldn't want to be stuck coming to america if that happened. saying all that, it would be sick if he goes to seattle. what a great get. this would only encourage more europeans to seriously consider mls offers earlier in their career. even the rumors help that out i think.

does drew carry have that kind of money?

March 30, 2008  01:13 PM ET

I give this rumor a 1 percent chance of happening. Henry could come to MLS, when he's 35 but not now.

March 30, 2008  01:59 PM ET

In honor of Thierry Henry's imminent USA debut, I went out an purchased a Gillette Fusion razor.

March 30, 2008  02:08 PM ET

HA. Seriously? Cmon it would be awesome if he came to the MLS next year, but it aint gunna happen. Too young and he's still got too much game.

But wouldnt it be amazing if he did? Foolish on his part, yes, but amazing.

March 30, 2008  02:26 PM ET

I love the idea of Henry playing here in the States. That would be amazing.
But let's look at the facts: Barca paid Arsenal over US$30M just last summer for the rights to the Frech forward. Henry then signed a 4 year deal with Barca that pays him approx US$9M per season. There is also a release clause in his contract of 84.9M Pound Sterling (approx US$170M).
It is sad but, in short, this isn't happening.

i am about to have a heart attack if this is true for sure.

WOOO. unbelievable

March 30, 2008  03:20 PM ET

If Henry comes, I'd say he has the same IQ level as Beckham. A very low IQ level.

March 30, 2008  03:46 PM ET

dont forget that sFC will be playing in qWest Field and will do just fine in sales and tickets. Dont underestimate the loyal fanbase already existing in the Seattle region either. Age seems to be the biggest decision factor for everyone but its not. Exposure is the key. If for some ridiculous reason Portugal's Cristiano decided to come to MLS within the next two-three years, as much as that would seem like a waste of talent, exposure would still be the biggest issue. And let me tell you, there will definitely not be any shortages of ticket sales at the gate for that one :)

March 30, 2008  03:59 PM ET

Get real. This is not going to happen. Maybe when he's in his mid-30's. Look at how well Angel is doing here, Henry would tear up the league. It wouldn't even be challenge and he'd be bored. Grow up people.

March 30, 2008  04:32 PM ET

You guys are naive.

Forget boredom. MONEY TALKS.

Why is Becks here early? MONEY.

Why will Henry be here early? MONEY.

There is a reason why there's DP rule.

ONe of the greatest players in the world is not going to waste his time im the worst league in the world. Players like beckham do it for the money. Henry is not that kind of guy. there is no way of it happening. atleast for another 6 or 7 years. england spain and italy have the best football and thats were everyone wants to play. and lets all come to reality. who th f would wanna play in the mls?

March 30, 2008  04:51 PM ET

The MLS is a league on the come. TH14 has already got national endorsements and nobody even knows who he is. He comes to MLS and he can hit the same sort of endorsement jackpot that Becks did.

Personally I think these guys also realize that this is a pretty monumental/historic point in the sport's history in the US. And that some of them find the opportunity to contribute to that parallels playing with the European sides.

And the money.

March 30, 2008  04:55 PM ET

Worst league in the world? Henry doesn't care about money? You sound like a brilliant person, bluefever14. Please, share more of you incredible insight with us...
