Are USC sidelines dangerous?

USC's open-door policy for spring practice allows hundreds of fans and other interested onlookers to roam the sideline during workouts and mingle with players and coaches on the field afterward. On Sunday, wide receiver Damian Williams was nearly undone by the Trojans' welcome mat. Williams, who has been enjoying a highlight-reel spring, was knocked out of practice after twisting his ankle while avoiding a collision with a child. The incident occurred about 90 minutes into the two-hour workout, which drew a crowd that gathered in clusters four to five deep along the length of the sideline near the entry gate of USC's practice facility. Afterward, still wearing the ice pack, the sophomore transfer from Arkansas said he hoped to practice this week and was thankful for not being more seriously injured.

That sounds like a freak accident. I wouldn't consider it dangerous.

March 31, 2008  09:43 AM ET

Maybe not dangerous, but I would prefer if we kept children and "roaming fans" off the sidelines.

March 31, 2008  10:14 AM ET

It could end someone's career, so I would think its dangerous.

nice work avoidin the kid tho

March 31, 2008  11:29 AM ET

And the highlight reel play-of-the-day went to?

Maybe not dangerous, but I would prefer if we kept children and "roaming fans" off the sidelines.

yeah, there are too many people on sidelines during football games - v.i.p.s, kids, journalists, almost everybody and anybody. Rules should restrict who can be on the sidelines to essential personnel during football games - and practices. I mean, you don't see folks crowding dugouts the way they crowd football sidelines. One of these days, some civilian is going to get knocked into the choir invisible by a player. Or is this another money thing?

WATCH YOUR KIDS AT ALL TIMES>>>>where was the parent during this????

March 31, 2008  12:28 PM ET

EXACTLY Mic... I love SC's open door policy... But if you are going to take children... WATCH them... You are lucky you are able to watch one of the top programs in the country practice... Be responsible for cryin out loud

March 31, 2008  01:46 PM ET

Maybe it was Snoop Dogg's kid...? He likes to hang around the program doesn't he?

March 31, 2008  03:05 PM ET

That sounds like a freak accident to me.

March 31, 2008  03:12 PM ET

That's sounds so cool to be able to be on the sidelines for spring practices. I would think that it causes more harm than good eventually.

March 31, 2008  03:54 PM ET

WATCH your friggen KIDS people, we have a confence title and national title to get this year, we dont need any injuries this year like last year!!! GO TROY!!!!

March 31, 2008  06:14 PM ET

Yeah, when a player can potentially suffer any injury, I would call it dangerous. By the way, how STUPID are these adults to have their small children this close to full-contact football drills?

March 31, 2008  07:16 PM ET

Its going to be dangerous when James Laurinaitis & company beat usc's **** on sep 13th. OHIO STATE FOREVER LOYAL FOREVER ROYAL

March 31, 2008  07:32 PM ET

It's always about the Irish or Buckeyes, no matter what happens nor where it happens. It's a good thing the players play the game instead of tunnel-vision fans. Good luck to which ever team plays USC and may the best team win. Some people need to join the real world.

March 31, 2008  07:54 PM ET

Hehe... Good one Royal... It's going to be hard to beat us.... When you can't score any points... Seeing as most of our D is back... And all of our skill guys are on offense too... Your only hope... Is that our O-line... Takes some time to get things squared away

March 31, 2008  09:42 PM ET

It is awesome to be at their practice. You are where the coaches are during the game. I will say though, that maybe kids shouldnt be allowed because they are probably not paying attention.

March 31, 2008  09:43 PM ET

Oh yeah and to royal buckeye, I would aay USC 31 OSU 10

March 31, 2008  10:21 PM ET

I'm surprised he didn't run into an agent instead of a kid!

I haven't been to this site in weeks, and this is the first thread topic I hear. Yeah, why did I leave in the first place?
