Will fans welcome Pettitte?

During pregame introductions today, Andy Pettitte will have Yankee Stadium react to him for the first time since his Mitchell Report-tainted offseason. "I think he'll get a great reaction," GM Brian Cashman said yesterday. "He had a great reaction all through the camp." Pettitte admitted to using HGH multiple times, but he'll probably receive an extremely strong and supportive round of applause from the fans this afternoon in The Bronx. The popular veteran hardly appears to be viewed negatively or angrily by the Yankee public, though it's possible there could at least be some boos or jeers this afternoon. Several years ago Jason Giambi received a positive reception at Yankee Stadium after he admitted to using steroids without actually using the word.

It would go just this way for Bonds as well, if he were in Yankee pinstripes.......

March 31, 2008  10:13 AM ET

Of course they will, they're Yankee fans. OF course, the moment he loses 3 games in a row or has a bad outing, they'll be calling WFAN talking about how they never wanted him around...

mtr_nyc,
and what happens when and if Santana or any of your other stars stumble out of the gate? I think ya'll be dialing that same number, huh? Those in glass houses should never throw stones and most people who call those radio shows have as much baseball acumen as my poor dead in the ground uncle Dave.

March 31, 2008  12:37 PM ET

May he rest in peace.

March 31, 2008  12:39 PM ET

Amen.

March 31, 2008  01:03 PM ET

They will cheer for him....the real fans will.

March 31, 2008  01:42 PM ET

Of coarse he will be cheered,
He came up in the Yankee system. He is very well liked.
If he falters any team would think about what to do with a faltering player, but he won't. He was solid last year and I look for more of the same this year. Anything could happen of coarse, I just don't see it now.

March 31, 2008  02:25 PM ET

absolutely....we will welcome him with open arms ar Fenway Park this ...

Kum baya my Lord....Kum bayah...oh Lord...Kumbaya...

and the lamb shall lie down with the lion....

March 31, 2008  02:26 PM ET

..let he who is without sin cast the first stone...

March 31, 2008  04:08 PM ET

don't want to cause any trouble here, but the Yankees have yet to win a game this year..

March 31, 2008  04:12 PM ET

It is onlky time before they re-sign Roidger again. Desperation is setting in.
The Red Sox are at .500, you can't win the AL East at .500...time for some desperate moves on their part as well, more desperate than hiring and old Colon.

It is opening day in the Bx., time to change my Avatar.

March 31, 2008  04:22 PM ET

There, I am all ready for opening day.

March 31, 2008  04:58 PM ET

Bob. and we still have yet to win a game. But we haven't lost a game either so far this season. :) And i know you are trying to be more diplomatic and rational but easy on the sweetner there, okay? Lord Almighty.
That was a vey good avatar but I like when you put on the baseball uni, AllStarz

March 31, 2008  05:34 PM ET

ok ok, so the Lord saw fit to rain out Opening Day in the Bronx today....

he's just tryin to cleanse the Evil Empire...

still a few Red Sox Nation memberships left...get em before they're gone....

March 31, 2008  06:38 PM ET

As long as he wins, they'll never boo him in the Bronx. He could be found with bags and bags and HGH, and steroids, be convicted of a DWI which injured others, or be charged with assault of a female and they would still cheer him. But give up a homerun to Ramirez or Ortiz, or Ellsbury, and they'll boo him out out of the city.
