Pirates, LaRoche at impasse
The Pirates and Adam LaRoche have reached an impasse in discussions aimed at a long-term contract, and it might be insurmountable. Throughout the offseason, the team and its starting first baseman had been talking about an extension of three or four years, and that continued even after they avoided arbitration Jan. 14 by agreeing to a one-year, $5 million contract. But neither side sounds remotely satisfied with the other's most recent offer, and each has backed off in the past week. The team, one source said, might be backing off for good.

The impasse is that they don't want to pay him since he sucks, and he can't accept the truth.

LaRoche and his long swing are way overrated. He is the next Ben Grieve. Anybody remember him? 3 years or more would be a mistake.

Can anyone remember the last time the Pirates were relevant? Thanks to the brilliant Bud Selig, teams like Pittsburch, Kansas City, Tampa Bay, Oakland, etc. are no longer competitive and should not be in the major leagues. Eight teams should be removed from the major leagues because the talent pool does not justify their existence

Um, Oakland has been pretty competitive since '99. This is the 1st time they're actually in rebuilding mode since then. Their problem was closing out playoff series when they had the chance to do so. Do NOT compare the A's to Pittsburgh or Kansas City, unless you're talking about championship teams in the '70 & 80s.

I understand Original81, but my point is teams like Oakland develop talent and then either trade them off or watch them go to the highest bidder (the Florida Marlins do the same). Without a real revenue sharing/salary cap system, even mid-market teams have no chance to compete. The rich teams siphon off the talent and basically use teams like the As, Pirates, etc. as their farm system. By the way, we had an Oakland farm team in Huntsville for years and it was amazing the talent they brought through there.
