Will OSU seek Self's help?

The natural candidate for Oklahoma State is Kansas' Bill Self, who played at OSU, met his wife in Stillwater and coached under Eddie Sutton there. Self says if someone from OSU were to call him, "I would strongly recommend that they move in a different direction." With Sean Sutton out as coach of Oklahoma State's basketball team, Mike Holder will be making his first hire in a revenue-producing sport since taking over as athletic director on Sept. 16, 2005. The stakes are higher now that Dallas billionaire Boone Pickens' gifts to improve OSU athletics have grown to more than $300 million. You don't get rid of Sean Sutton, whose father's name is on the court at Gallagher-Iba Arena, unless you're ready to bring in an established name. Holder will aim high, and Pickens will give him whatever he needs.

OSU....Kansas? Back to back NITs.....Final Four/Elite 8s. I know he went to OSU and met his wife there...that's great. But he has a good thing going at Kansas. I doubt he leaves right now. Even Roy Williams said no to UNC the first time they came asking. I think Self will do the same.

April 2, 2008  09:35 AM ET

he'll go when they ask him for the fifth time

April 2, 2008  10:30 AM ET

I understand Self has a history at OSU, but why would he from a Tier 1 program at Kansas to a Tier 2 program at OSU? That's a downward move. Stay at Kansas.

April 2, 2008  12:15 PM ET

Coach Self to OSU to coach basketball is as ridiculous as Coach Stoops to OSU to coach football. You don't leave an elite program to go to a good program, even if it is your alma mater. Roy going to North Carolina was moving from one elite program to another. It wasn't the money that drew him there, and Boone Picken's money won't make a difference to Coach Self. Lou Perkins will do what he needs to do to keep Bill happy and a Jayhawk!

April 2, 2008  12:27 PM ET

Self as always followed the money, so all OSU has to do is pony up the cash... Look what he did from ORU to their in town rival, Tulsa... Then jumped to Illinois and then finally to Kansas... If there are enough $$$ signs, Self will go a running...

April 2, 2008  01:55 PM ET

^^ Correct, Self has a history of jumping ship for cash, this will be no different.

April 2, 2008  02:19 PM ET

Yes, Self left programs for cash, but he also left programs for better programs. Always moving up. There is no up from Kansas. Remember, the only coach in Kansas history with a losing record is the man who invented the sport. KU=zenith. Self stays.

i'm not great at math but,

Lawrence > Stillwater

April 2, 2008  02:39 PM ET

If he wants to go down as a great coach he'll stay at Kansas.

April 2, 2008  02:44 PM ET

Bobby Pettino will resign and take that job.

April 2, 2008  03:41 PM ET

petrino..that's funny...if self goes to another big 12 school, he better not play any games in lawrence, ever, ever, ever again...he may not make it out of town...
i'll bet ku could get somebody to coach them...larry brown?????????

April 2, 2008  03:59 PM ET

to bad,he was a good coach with a bad team and just couldnt make it wotk in the big 12

April 2, 2008  04:27 PM ET

He ain't going to Oklahoma State. Pickens will throw a lot of money at him, though.

With as much money as Boone Pickens has he should go after Pitino or Calipari. I think he can make it financially worth their while to leave.

April 2, 2008  04:27 PM ET

*worth their wild*

April 2, 2008  05:00 PM ET

What's the chance Gillespie will leave Ky if offered Okie State?

April 2, 2008  05:07 PM ET

He won't go to OSU directly-
you don't take a step backwards........

Now if he is offered an NBA job, takes it, fails & wants to go back to college-
then he'd step backwards

April 2, 2008  05:57 PM ET

As an OSU alum I don't want Self, there are better fits out there than him. Let him stay at KU.

April 2, 2008  06:03 PM ET

If he wins it all this year, I could see him leaving... Don't know much about him though, but I do know a lot of money can change anyones feelings

April 2, 2008  06:22 PM ET

This is absurd......he's not going to go backwards. tdomine is right, he left for money, but also for better jobs with better programs. There's no way anyone would leave Kansas for OSU, even if it is his alma mater.

April 2, 2008  06:43 PM ET

he won't go if he's smart. from a great perenial basketball school to a school that will get rid of its basketball coach after two years. a coach that was never supported by mike holder or apparently t boone pickens. blatently so. tom dorado the voice of the cowboys made the statement that "when mike holder gets a coach that brings them back everyone will forget this". I say when sean sutton comes back as a coach somewhere else and kicks the pokes butts then i will forget. i am throwing all my cowboy stuff away. after 35 years i can't stand to be part of it anymore.
