Can Crean keep Gordon at IU?

Tom Crean worked wonders with Dwyane Wade when the two were at Marquette. Indiana's new coach soon will learn whether he will get the opportunity to draw plays for Eric Gordon. The most prolific freshman scorer in IU history will announce Friday afternoon whether he is returning to school or entering June's NBA draft, according to a person familiar with the situation. Gordon, who averaged 20.9 points, is projected as a top 10 pick, should he decide to leave.

no

April 2, 2008  10:31 AM ET

Nope...Gordon's gone, even though he needs another year in college. He did nothing in the tournament or the last part of the season. Plus, IU's program is in turmoil right now.

April 2, 2008  11:18 AM ET

Gordon should follow Curry and stay in school at least one more year. neither is ready for the NBA.

April 2, 2008  12:55 PM ET

I think he could. Crean did a good job with a young man named Dwayne Wade. Maybe Crean can convince Gordon of that.

April 2, 2008  01:16 PM ET

No...Dwayne Wade did well regardless of Crean.
Sorry but Wade created Crean...not the other way around.
Crean rode the coat-tails of D-Wade for 4 more years...a few first round exits in the big dance...oh and some good 4th - 6th place finishes in the Big East.

Gordon's gone, but I'd like to see him stay at least one more year - and I'm an Illini fan. I have never liked kids going straight to the pros from high school and I really like the idea of them staying in school at least a couple years to polish their games. Gordon has a few (minor) flaws in his game that another year in college (with Crean coaching him) will easily fix.

April 2, 2008  02:46 PM ET

I hope he does stay. He has several areas to improve, and his improvement will keep IU going strong during difficult times.

April 2, 2008  02:52 PM ET

Forget "polishing his game", how about getting a freaking education?

April 2, 2008  03:30 PM ET

"education" and the NBA have become mutually exclusive -- or should I say, intelligence and the NBA ....

April 2, 2008  04:25 PM ET

Oh please Zizou. Wade wasn't highly regarded when he got to Marquette. Actually, if he was a great player he never would have gone to a school like Marquette in the first place.

Crean did make him. Crean developed his game, and anyone who thinks otherwise is a damned fool.

April 2, 2008  04:46 PM ET

Gordon's outta here like last year. i just hope he's not the next Dajuan Wagner.

April 2, 2008  05:02 PM ET

i say stay for at least one more year...that was no way to end your 1st year of college...losing and shooting below .400 percent in da tournament...he needs one more year...and on another note its great that davidson will most likely put curry back at the point guard position...he will better fit the 1 den da 2 at the pro level...

Hey Archbishop, you are not recalling history correctly....Dwayne Wade was a highly touted high school player who scored poorly on his college boards, which meant he could not be given an NCAA scholarship. A lot of schools looking at him worried he may never pass, but Crean believed, as Wade had said, that the test was an anomaly. Sitting out his freshman year, he practiced with the team, and the players knew he was special. So much so, that before and after away games, they called him up to talk about the game. In my opinion, the two made each other - Wade had the talent to single-handily lift the team to the FInal Four, Crean had the gumption to take a chance on a player everyone turned their back on, and build a team around him.......

not a chance, hes going to be a top 10 maby even top 5 pick,sp hes leaving

April 4, 2008  01:58 PM ET

If Gordon is available when the Pacers come up for a pick, he'll be continuing his basketball education right at home. Definitely a project type player with a lot of "potential" that needs to be developed. Might as well get paid big $$$ by the pros instead of getting a college degree. Just another kid pushed too fast by his parents and posse.
