Buckeye transferring to WVU

Devon Lyons is heading for West Virginia, but not necessarily to continue a childhood competition and attempt to beat out his baby -- but taller -- brother, 6-foot-8 Wes. "I'm coming there playing receiver," the elder, 6-4 Lyons said last night from Columbus, Ohio, where he is planning to graduate from Ohio State in June with a degree in consumer affairs. He will then officially transfer to West Virginia as a graduate student and regain his eligibility to play next fall. He added that coach Bill Stewart and his staff also are talking about him playing in the secondary. Lyons, who played only three games last season and 21 in his career at Ohio State, applied to the NCAA in early January for a hardship case so he could transfer closer to home because of his father's heart condition.

That will be kind of wierd; officially he ia a Alumni of OSU (will have his undergrad degree from OSU), but will be playing for WV. I love college football.

This was done before...Ryan Mundy graduated from Michigan and still had eligibility left so he enrolled in WVU's grad school and suited up this past season.

Good luck to Lyons, hope his pops holds on for a while

April 3, 2008  12:55 PM ET

THE TRUTH: I was not aware of that, thanks for the info. Do you think UM sent him to WVU to recruit coach RR? (LOL)

Interesting given all of the inter school changed that have happened lately. I also have some friends that completed their bachelors and transferred to smaller programs for their masters and used up their eligibilty.

Leo Ferrine is doing this and going to Delaware. It's a good opportunity and a bit of a loophole in the NCAA rules.

Thats a schoker

April 4, 2008  02:03 PM ET

Good luck to Lyons. Wish he would have panned out at tOSU. He's got good speed and size. Good he can play with his brother for a year and he played a little safety for the Bucks a couple of years ago so he should be fine with the switch.

Big ten players seem to just like a change of scenery.

show me some loyalty

April 7, 2008  10:21 AM ET

I wish him the best and hope his father is OK.

Unfortunately, Ohio State is so DEEP with talent it is hard to get everyone playing time.

It won't get any easier with the #4 '08 recruiting class coming in(Rivals.com).

But, what an enviable position for a coach to be in!

April 7, 2008  10:24 AM ET

And to Jabril1217: yes, Devin will be an OSU alumni playing for the Mountaineers. I can tell you where his heart is(Ohio State, duh!) and that this move was made to help him increase his chances of playing in the NFL.

But make no mistake, the dude is a BUCKEYE!

April 7, 2008  04:32 PM ET

this dude is a moron... this guy has decided to leave a team that is returning to the natl title to a team that has lost its idenity.... but hey go ahead and go we have plenty of talent to replace your sorry ****. ohio state foreva loyal foreva royal...............

Ryan Mundy and Devon Lyons are cousins. Surprised?

April 8, 2008  03:50 AM ET

1 - Always have to congratulate college athletes who graduate, especially football players. 2 - Even more impressive that he's enrolling in grad school. 3 - Gotta wish the kid the best, especially with an ailing father. To bash him not fully knowing his circumstance is a little ridiculous ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE A BUCKEYE YOURSELF. That is all.

April 8, 2008  06:16 PM ET

Kudos and GL. Lets start counting all the things this kid did right in this decision:
1- He was an 04 recruit, so he at least red shirted, possibly red and grey shirted.
2- Left a program where he wasn't going to see the field except maybe the 4th quarter of some routes to get some real playing time his senior year before entering the career world.
3- Got his degree in 4 years - something few non-athletes accompolish.
4- On his way to a graduate degree.
5- Gets to spend some quality time with his little bro before moving on.
6- Gets to spend some time close to his ailing father. (that gets tough once you start your career)

Dude barely played no one really gives a hoot. Second congratulations on him graduating from a great university like Ohio State though, but this isn't that big of a story.
