Dolphins not showing draft hand

As the Dolphins continue to keep their options open for a trade out of the top spot, it appears this mystery will linger all the way until the final day on April 26. And everyone -- including the agents of the top players -- believes just that. At this point, if Miami can't find a trade partner, it at least could be argued that Miami is more likely to choose Chris Long or Jake Long over anyone else, with Matt Ryan a close third given coach Tony Sparano's endorsement of John Beck and Josh McCown.

Is it just me or does this picutre of Matt Ryan resemble Ryan Leaf?

April 3, 2008  06:38 AM ET

yep looks like a brother, but they are not tipping there hand because they got the top pick and there is no one who is really deserving of the pick. Kind of like the year after Le Bron.

He does look like Leaf! Lets hope he dosent play like him

They have no QB, so Ryan would be an obvious choice but I still think they take Chris Long IF they dont get lucky and trade that pick away

Chris Long should be the obvious pick. The Dolphins front seven could be really good next year. Taylor will be great at outside linebacker. They signed Calvin Pace and traded for Jason Ferguson. Long would cap it off as a strong defensive end.

yes becuase defense wins championships. . . the only problem is getting there

April 3, 2008  09:38 AM ET

Yes, very Leafy picture....almost makes me nervous...Ryan Leaf is like an assistant coach for a D2 school in West Texas...beautiful job...well deserved....

Absolutely no need to take the QB with the first pick. He's more Alex Smith than Peyton Manning. Taking a QB first would be throwing away next year. While their QB situation stinks, so does almost every other position on that team.

The top 3 picks in the '99 draft were Tim Couch, Donovan McNabb, and Akili Smith. Tom Brady was picked in the 6th Round in 2000. That pretty much sums up what a waste it is to take a QB at the top of the draft (especially one that you don't absolutely love).

Go with one of the defensive guys and then at least try to stop the other team's offense next year.

Unless, of course, his name was Troy Aikman.

April 3, 2008  12:51 PM ET

Leaf was a bust not only for his play but for the fact that he was a nut case as well. If Ryan is a bust it wont be because of his attitude.

April 3, 2008  01:14 PM ET

You mean the Troy Aikman that went 1-15 his first year? He got knocked around so much that first year that it probably took 5 years off of his career. For all of the Troy Aikmans and Peyton Mannings, there's at least one Akili Smith, Tim Couch, Kyle Boller, Ryan Leaf, David Klingler, etc. If you pick QB first and you pick wrong then your salary cap is screwed up for 5 years.

It makes no sense to pay a first-pick QB $30m guaranteed just so he can get the snot beat out of him for a year. Bring in the QB once you've got somebody to protect him. Or pick one up in the later rounds and then there's no pressure to play him in early.

the fins did not sign calvin pace..the jets did didnt they?

April 3, 2008  02:17 PM ET

Hey bc, come visit the mcnabb thread.

April 3, 2008  02:44 PM ET

Again - trade that freakin first pick to the Browns for Brady Quinn and the Browns fouth round pick. Quinn was a Weiss guy in college , Weiss coached under Parcells - makes sense to me !!!

April 3, 2008  03:15 PM ET

The logical pick would be Jake Long because of the longevity of OL in the NFL!

April 3, 2008  06:30 PM ET

Their hand is... they have a pick they cant trade, and they're going to draft jake long and hope he's not the next robert gallery.

MATT RYAN WILL BE DISSIPOINTMENT.....................

April 4, 2008  09:08 AM ET

come on, take chris long. Make the defense tight. defense wins championships. can you imagine him and taylor together. take henne, flacco, brohm whomever is left in the second round. Personally I would like henne but it really doesn't matter. sparano can endorse whomever he wants, the fact of the matter is that the dolphins do not have any legitimate qb.

April 4, 2008  09:14 AM ET

by the way, they wouldn't have to trade their pick to cleveland for quinn and a fourth if they would have used their heads last year and taken him.
