Marquette helpless in losing Crean

Marquette University didn't have a chance. When athletic director Steve Cottingham got off the plane in Denver on Tuesday and turned on his cell phone, he could see there were plenty of people trying to reach him via text message or voicemail. The news wasn't good. Tom Crean, the school's high-profile men's basketball coach for the past nine years, was headed to Indiana University. As it happens, one of those voicemails was from Crean. The coach and the athletic director never connected. There was nothing that Cottingham, or Greg Kliebhan, the school's senior vice president, or Father Robert Wild, Marquette's president, could do about it.

Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

April 3, 2008  11:43 PM ET

it doesnt matter, hes going to stink up Indiana like he did to his last team

Tom Crean is what Indiana needs. A character person with not a single blemish of any recruiting violations associated with him and his programs. I'm shocked Indiana didn't go out ad try and hire another snake like Isiah Thomas. He might be the only guy who could make this situation worse.

What a sleazy move on Crean's part to not even involve his current employer. Hopefully, he'll whoop it up at a strip club with some recruits and never coach a game at Indiana (a la 'Bama's almost head coach in football).

Grow up you whiners. NCAA hoops is big time business these days with coaching changes and defections typical of corporations' constant revolving doors. Crean's record doesn't stink - either on the court or in the classroom. Check the facts before making a bozo comment. Sorry Marquette, IU is a bigger program with more national prominence. That's the reality - deal with it.

Don't expect any NCAA championships though.

April 4, 2008  04:47 PM ET

What IU fans expect is a team of high character players who well represent the university, get their degrees and understand the tradition. Sure, we'd love another banner or two to add to the 5 already in Assembly Hall but not at any cost. After the past 6 year parade of malcontents, 1 and dones, bozo students and cheating coaches - we're more than content with the positive upside that Coach Crean brings to the program.

Marquette or Indiana? Marquette or Indiana? HA! That was a tough decision. The President & AD of Marquette could have offered him the their roles and he wouldn't stay. Marquette is a 2nd rated program to Indiana. GROW UP!

Marquette will get a new coach and everything will be fine.

No, Indiana is obviously much more of a has-been than a nationally-prominent basketball program. Certain of the posters on this board are more delusional that Packer fans. I didn't think that was possible...
