Bowa goes off on new rule

Dodgers third base coach Larry Bowa said the three-game suspension he was handed by the commissioner's office Wednesday was "more ludicrous" than the new rule that he protested by screaming in the face of umpire crew chief Ed Montague to get himself thrown out of the previous night's game. The sixth-inning explosion, during which Montague said Bowa hit him with the tip of his helmet and shoved Manager Joe Torre into him, also resulted in Bowa's being fined an undisclosed amount. The point of contention was a new rule that forbids base coaches to cross the lines of their designated boxes toward home plate or the field until batted balls pass them -- a rule Bowa said was concocted by "people in New York that wear the coats and ties and don't get on the field" and prevents him from performing his duties properly.

Seeing how you ended up wearing the helmet in the 3rd base coach's box I think you will eventually follow this rule too.

Bowa is such a ****. He pulled this crap in Philly when he was here and it get's real old after a while. We get it, you're old school. Now shut up and follow the rules.

Hey Larry, guess what else prevents you from performing your duties properly.... getting suspended for three games ya dope. You look terrific in that John Olerud field helmet though!

What the heck are those candy nose front office people thinking? Big deal about they being out of the box, this has been going on for over 100 years of baseball. If you are going to inforce the rules how about the players haveing their pockets hanging out and their pants down around their ankles that looks like gang banger shi-t to me.

April 3, 2008  09:22 AM ET

I'm not gonna argue the helmet rule -- the death that precipitated the rule occurred in the Rockies' organization and was tough on all Rox fans. But jeez, Larry, lighten up and just play nice. That said, Montague says Bowa "hit" him with the "tip of his helmet" ??? Who's wearing the man pants here??? Both of you -- grow up or you'll both be working for the Rockford Peaches soon.

I thought Bowa would be a nice compliment to Torre. Bowa is a good sitiational game manager and Torre well I'll just say he has room for improvement. However, Bowa has been in the news way too much. People jumped all over him and I tried to defend some of his action......Larry we are starting to look like fools. Enough all ready. You are the 3rd base caoch not the manager.

Stupid rule. The guy who was killed was hit in the neck. Should the coaches wear Body Armor?
Not a big Bowa fan, but he's right. Let's get the Nannies out and play ball!

April 3, 2008  10:06 AM ET

Lary Bowa is, was and will forever remain an azzhole and I don't care how good and fired up he was as a player.

April 3, 2008  10:31 AM ET

Here's a thought...MOVE the damn boxes so they have a better view

April 3, 2008  10:36 AM ET

Bowa is a tool. But like Thunderdragon said above, MLB should enforce all it's rules and not just single out a few such as this one. Bowa is right, but he's such a jerk his antics become the debated topic, not the rule he's protesting.

April 3, 2008  10:39 AM ET

The helmet wouldn't have prevented Coolbaugh's death. He was hit in the neck, not on the covered area of his head.

April 3, 2008  10:45 AM ET

I have also said this before....do they REALLY needs base coaches? Since most communication is done by signs anyhow why not let the manager or coached do it from the top of the dugout and have the latitude to prowl around like basketball coaches?

April 3, 2008  10:51 AM ET

Bowa has more fire in LA than he had in NY...

April 3, 2008  10:51 AM ET

You have to have base coaches. When a player is motoring around second or third, he is looking towards the third base coach for direction. Same with rounding first, but it is a little less important as the player has a complete view of the field...

I understand what you are saying, but I think MLB is getting too picky about he coaches, who NEVER stay in the box, and Bowa is being, well Bowa, acting like a total redass

HEY NOW, it's just baseball...using a Moderator is a little much don't you think?I mean, I wouldn't even have used a Moderator at Nuremburg.

Coolbaugh was hit in the temple, not the neck.

I always thought third base coaches were only suppose to use "sign language''. You know - hand signals, I never knew they spoke !!! See what happens !!!
