MLS Seattle set to splash on Henry

10:46 AM ET 04.04 | Thierry Henry is being lined up to rival David Beckham as the face of U.S. soccer. The French striker has been targeted to launch the newly formed Seattle team when it makes its MLS debut next year. And the franchise's multi-billionaire owner Paul Allen will tempt Henry with a deal worth $300,000 a week. Henry, 30, only joined Barcelona in a $32 million move from Arsenal last June. But the Spanish giants are planning a summer clear-out after slumping to third place in La Liga. And Henry could go despite having more than three years left on his $256,000-a-week deal.

Beckham has a better chance of playing in the 2010 World cup than this deal going down, maybe they should try to get henry in 4 or 5 years you know like they did with Beckham get the big crowd pleasing european stars when they are past their prime and on their final push as a professional soccer player, while their at it they should also try to get Ronaldo, Figo, Zidane, and Barthez.

He won't be going to Seattle. At some point he may make the jump to MLS but it won't be to play with a bunch of MLS castoffs on an expansion team.
Cheap plug sorry if it bugs anyone, if anyone has some time to kill check out the football site sinnacle dot com***

Paul Allen has the money to spare... but he's shown with the Trail Blazers otherwise... I think there'd have to be some sort of return on investment.
Maybe Philadelphia's team is more likely, a bigger market anyway.....

I think this would be a wise investment for Paul Allen. Henry is an exciting player and people will fill Qwest field to watch this guy. The team has 14k season ticket deposits and when Real Madrid came to play they sold 60k + tickets. The investment would be worth it for Paul Allen.
Note: He has spent money, he also owns the Seahawks.

Yeah, the Seattle angle is the thing that sucks the life from this rumor. Unless they somehow trade for another DP slot to give Henry a little more experience (i.e. someone on his level) to work with this wouldn't make sense from a competitive standpoint. From a marketing standpoint it's only going to bring worldwide attention to what will prolly be a losing side for a couple of years. From an image standpoint MLS can't afford that. I pray that the Galaxy get things turned around but we don't need another megastar on an inconsistent side.
Having said that, maybe that all will go to show that the MLS is not a pushover league and no matter who you are you do have to come up with something special to dominate here. You can't just put a superstar on an expansion club and expect it to flourish, even if he's in top form.

A chacne from being expanison to cjamps vy signing 1 player? If MLS does sign him now its perfect timing because he can stil rampage defenders.

MLS is trying to buy its worldwide popularity. It's just not going to happen. Personally, I believe that despite their best efforts, soccer in the states will be like hockey in the states: popular at first and then almost invisible.
Geographically speaking, it wouldn't work. In Europe, fans can relatively easily travel from one city to the next to support their teams. Rivalries build not only because of the teams but because of the fans. In the states, when NY plays LA, fans have to take a plane out to go see games. It just doesn't make sense.
Anyways, they can try all they want, but everyone knows that Football and Nascar will lead the sports race for many MANY years to come.

this wouldn't be good for henry or seattle, herny has at least 4 good years left in him to play in europe, idk if he would play in the epl for a team other than arsenal tho, and they are playing much better w/o him. and when an MLSt eam dumps all their money into a superstar it ruins the team. look at LA, they have all their money in beckham and donovan, but they have absolutely no defense. sure it helps generate ticket sales and revenue, but the team is just terrible. lucky for LA there is no relegation system in MLS, for henry's sake i hope this doesn't happen, cuz beckham just seems miserable half the time playing w/ a crappy LA team

Four words: not going to happen. How much of a transfer fee would Barca want for Henry? They paid $32 million for him a year ago. They will not let him walk away for free, or even for cheap. In addition to a $300,000 a week salary? Not to mention the exchange rate between dollars and euros right now. I doubt the money is there for all of that.
Also, Henry has no need to move to MLS at this point of his career. I could see him moving back to France, most likely to Lyon, for two or three years before he jumps to MLS. Real doesn't need strikers, he's probably done with the EPL, and I can't imagine he would want to move back to Italy after his time at Juve and the bitterness after France's defeat in the World Cup (although could you imagine Milan throwing out a frontline of Kaka, Henry, and Pato). Pair him up with Benzema for two years at Lyon. Transition to the next great French striker, then make the move to MLS. At least that's what makes the most sense to me.

If Seattle were to get Henry then I will definitely be a fan of theirs. As an avid Arsenal supporter, this would be a huge deal but I do not see Henry leaving Barca right now for the MLS. Bad career move and he has plenty left.
If he comes to the MLS, another team maybe but not an expansion.
But money talks so stayed tuned...

This would be great, but one super star on an mls team is not good enough. Mls is really gaining momentum, but the salary cap is what is preventing this league from expoloding. A 2.2 million salary cap and 1 dp is chump change. although i can already see much improvment in the league play this year, from last, the league seriously needs to consider either more dp's and a much higher cap or both. Lets face it mls can get european league super stars, but whos going to come and play alone, look at beckham, he cant do it by himself. until the league confronts this issue, its going to be tough to land primed players in europe.

That is an absurd amount of money. I don't believe this at all, but it keeps popping up.

Thierry will come? We will see. BUT it is pretty precarious for you soccer afficionados spending time posting here to throw around "bad career move", "no incentive", "it won't happen for several years yet." Hmmm, who else was that said about just about a year ago?
There are many reasons for a man to make a decision. your two or three reasons may not be one of them.
Seattle itself sounds like a city that would appeal to Europeaners: Trendy, beautiful country, liberal, etc. Nice place to raise les fils.

But they're still going to lose immediately. What guy just coming here from Europe would want to deal with that kind of aggravation? I wouldn't. Seattle will get their man, but I don't think now is the time. And Seattle is not LA. Great city and all but c'mon man...

If Barca wins the Champions League, he will have won every major trophy. Why not make the move? I picture Drew Carey nudging Paul Allen to make a big move. It might happen, who's to say?
