A's Harden auditions for other teams

Catcher Jason Varitek, who handled the admirable outing of his own starter (Jon Lester), said "there's a reason" behind all the hype surrounding Rich Harden. "You're talking about some pretty good command when you can throw Lowell a splitter on 3-and-2 with the bases loaded. Complement that with 95 (mph, on the fastball), and you've got yourself a pretty good combo." If this was an audition, you figured the Mets, Yankees, Cardinals and Tigers (among many others) were somewhere in the audience. It might take another half-dozen good starts before anyone is convinced that Harden is for real. In their current state, the A's will take whatever comes their way.

Gotta love that MONEYBALL CRAP

Omar has nothing to send him, guys. Hey...I'd take Harden in a second too. But our pieces are all gone. We need to rebuild the system for 2 years of drafting and building, then make a move. At this point...its win or bust. We dont have the pieces to sustain a future as of now.

FMSD, actually I think if the Mets could get Harden then they should make the deal but I fear Moon may be right that they have little to offer in exchange. But then I never thought the Mets could get Sanatana, either. So, who knows.

April 4, 2008  11:37 AM ET

The Tigers I'm sure would like to have him, to solidify the rotation a bit. What are the odds of us having an injury or two?

April 4, 2008  11:43 AM ET

The thing about Rich Harden is he never stays healthy. You watch what happens . Harden will be on the DL before you know it.

April 4, 2008  11:44 AM ET

I have NO respect for guys that cannot stay healthy

As with Blandon, Harden has talent, and can pitch, but as others have said, there's always something wrong with him. If you got young studs just a year or two away, keep them...

April 4, 2008  12:14 PM ET

Agreed... Harden is the real deal, but the issue of his health will make any smart GM gun shy.

As for the Mets, they need to go after low-cost, low-risk players that other teams have given up on (i.e., Claudio Vargas). Surely, they'll find a gem in the rough and Rick Peterson can help. Let the Yankees and Sawks give up their farm system for Harden.

April 4, 2008  12:18 PM ET

Oakland will probably ask teams like the Yankees for Hughes, Kennedy, Melky and 3 prospects for Harden. Then realize how ridiculous they sound, and give him away for a nosebleed seat at new Yankee Stadium.

April 4, 2008  12:28 PM ET

I think the A's will move Harden but nearer the deadline (after he's proven he can remain healthy), however, I have a feeling that with injuries starting to happen to some teams, they'll make a panic offer that Beane cannot refuse.

Billy Beane loves panic offers.

April 4, 2008  01:12 PM ET

The funny thing is that Billy Beane will get more for Harden than Pohlad got for Santana.

April 4, 2008  02:28 PM ET

Well adding more to the Mets rotation would be cool, but there is one issue. THe Mets have nothing to trade. Most of their prospects are with the Twins now from the Santana trade. So I don't think it will happen.

Zwtek, yankee64 and met 2008: good comments and how ironic!

April 4, 2008  03:57 PM ET

Been a big Harden fan fora while now and, the thing is is that if the Mets deal for him..., and with Pedro on the DL again, they can use him..., he could slide right in behind Santana. This guy is 26 with a lot of pitches left in that arm and the Mets pitching staff..., 6 are 32 and over. If the Mets wanna be back in the postseason, which they should be this year, they need younger arms in the rotation and Harden is a guy they should go after!

"In their current state, the A's will take whatever comes their way."

I'm sorry, but for the story to imply that the A's are just going to give him away is ridiculous. Billy Beane will get quality players if he does part with Harden.
