Has Miller Park been worth it?

Although Miller Park has certainly been a success for the Brewers, the larger question is whether the stadium has been a net economic benefit to the community. Bud Selig believes passionately that such revenue growth did occur in the metropolitan area and commissioned a study released in October 2006 that showed the financial impact. In addition, he and other baseball supporters say the intangible benefit of a sports stadium to a community - the boost it gives to a city's image and character - is considerable but not easily measured in dollars and cents. "It produced revenue, it saved baseball for Milwaukee and Wisconsin, and Miller Park has been well-received," Selig said. Sports economists say the claim that a stadium can provide benefits, as has been the argument in dozens of stadium debates around the country, is a myth.

In my experience, if someone starts talking about the "intangible benefits" when justifying an action or a cost, you know they are grasping for straws...

Apparently Selig feels that stadiums have mystic qualities like some healing talisman that can't be quantified in dollars ans cents. Well he knows that publicly funded ballparks are good for baseball owners anyway.

Any endorsement attached to Selig is about as valuable as an economic one attached to George Bush.....

NOT WORTH A ****

The only way that a ballbark is going to really help the economy is if it is for an expansion team or a team that moves. I don't think that County Stadium was hurting the economy any more than Miller Park is helping the economy. I'm going to say what everyone is thinking: FIRE BUD SELIG!

April 4, 2008  10:37 AM ET

Wow Bud Selig defending the Milwaukee Brewers. I'm shocked. I would have never seen this coming.....if he hadn't been the reason the city got the team in the first place

April 4, 2008  10:45 AM ET

New ball parks do not bring people out. Winning teams do. Any ecomomic impact is directly tied to how many people travel through the area surrounding the ball park. Increased traffic by default can and usaully does cause increased revenues. Now, if the area around the ball park is not conducive to wining and dining, (read this any way that you wish to), then no matter how much winning is done the increased traffic will not mean increased revenues for that neighborhood around that ball park, or at any rate, the revenues will be increase neglibly.

I think Bud might be on to something. Hold on, I have to get the taste of vomit out of my mouth. Anyway, as a Chicagoan there was zero chance I was going to County Stadium for a game. However, I have made the drive to see the Brewers play in Miller Park. I love Wrigley, but Miller is kind of a cool experience too. In fact, we even turned it into a weekend with Germanfest on Saturday, a hotel room for Saturday night, and a game on Sunday.

We would not have stayed the night but for Miller Park.

Next week Bud will claim the park needs a 200Million public financed upgrade

April 4, 2008  11:11 AM ET

I will say I enjoyed being at Miller Park the time I was there and I did enjoy the brats.. had me three.... and the people at the ballpark were pleasant enough to be around... but, Miller Park did not and could not make me stay in Milwaukee by and of itself. Sorry. And, hyper, i mean no disrespect to your home town, my friend. It is a nice enough town but if I had me my druthers I would rather be in Chicago. :) sorry, I tend to like the bright lights, etc.....

Speaking as a guy who lives in Milwaukee, the park should have been built downtown. It's beautiful and in the middle of nowhere.

April 4, 2008  11:53 AM ET

No offense, 4192- I have nothing but love for Chicago.

Next time you're in Milwaukee, though, let me know and I'll show you a good time.

will do. :)

Even though th claim is that Pac Bell Park was privately financed (*cough* not entirely *cough*) the ball park absolutely revitalized the China Basin in San Francisco. As construction on the park began, some bars and restaurants opened up to mostly no customers. Once the park opened, they made out like gang busters.

Now there are condos, townhomes, supermarkets... a real neighborhood in what was once a lousy abandoned industrial area.

That park made it happen. Now, would it have happened without Bonds*? Well, now that is the million dollar question.

April 4, 2008  12:44 PM ET

You take 500+ million of public funds and "improve" any are and guess what? It Should improve...
Handing out 500 million directly to taxpayers also adds a boost to the economy, in case anyone really cared.

April 4, 2008  01:33 PM ET

Yeah, or the fact that Big Blue crashed and totally destroyed a nearly finished stadium that had to be rebuilt...and that there was a HUGE tax on luxury purchases (read: anything from the price of a new KIA and up)...So yeah, as of now many people in Milwaukee are still feeling those thousands of dollars of extra tax...at least I am still waiting for this "economic stimulus" to hit and pay me back.

I think its a good thing. I think having a winning team also helps too. We go down and make a weekend out of it, we go out to eat go to the zoo one day stay at a hotel that night and a game the other night, Its a good time.
