Colon comes up aces in Pawtucket opener

Bartolo Colon made it clear he doesn't want to stay in Pawtucket long. And if he continues to pitch the way he did last night, he won't have to. Colon pitched five scoreless innings, striking out five and allowing one hit and one walk, as the Red Sox beat the Indianapolis Indians, 3-0, in their season opener before 10,681 at McCoy Stadium.

When did the Red Sox sign Shrek?

April 4, 2008  11:17 AM ET

um...get it back in your pants Globe...it was Pawtucket

April 4, 2008  11:17 AM ET

I don't know but I think a lot of other teams wish they had especially at the bargain the sox got him for.

It may be Pawtucket but a 96 mph heater is still a 96 mph heater. Big boy got healthy... should make things interesting in the AL east.

but did that heater move???

I am fairly certain Bart doesn't eat fish..unless it is stuffed with sausage or bacon

I think this is going to end up being a very smart move for the Sox. I'm not saying Colon is going to be back in Cy Young form, of course not. But I think he's going to put together some solid outings for the Sox.

Only need movement if you use it to challenge hitters in the zone. He's using it to change speeds and painter the corners. It's just the minors right now but its still encouraging considering the winter ball reports of him stopping out at 86 mph and getting lit up like a chistmas tree. No?

April 4, 2008  11:56 AM ET

Said it before, saying it again...at $1mm, this was a no-brainer for the Sox. If they get 50 quality innings out of him this year, it's a bargain.

April 4, 2008  11:58 AM ET

regardless of what was paid for this guy, any pitcher over 30 that has a history of injuries is a huge risk....be careful of placing any stock in his future abilities to pitch. (And the risk is much higher the fatter the pitcher is.)

You can't disregard what was paid.

If Colon implodes, who cares? The Sox lose $1 million (which is a rounding error for them) and that's that. Pedro, Pavano, Hampton, etc... were all getting paid ridiculous salaries when they broke down.

April 4, 2008  12:06 PM ET

The problem is not the money, the problem is that Boston may need a regular replacement in the rotation. If he implodes no big deal, except that someone else will have to fill that role. That said i think he will make a servicable #5.

April 4, 2008  12:09 PM ET

Agreed, AllStarz.

Risk is on two fronts: salary and what is he being counted on for.

The salary is clearly not an issue.

And I don't really know how much he's realistically being counted on for. The Sox have 2 young guys in the rotation with inning limits, so if he could start 5-10 games, that'd be fantastic. But the Sox also have other spot-starters available (Snyder, Tavarez, etc...), so if he goes down I don't think it's that big of a deal.

April 4, 2008  12:37 PM ET

The Red Sox have Beckett, Dice-K, Wakefield, Lester, Buchholz, Colon, Tavarez and Masterson from which to keep a 5-man rotation rolling. Things may not turn out optimum in all cases, but I think they're covered fairly well. If Dice-K shows the anticipated improvement for his 2nd season,.... say 18 wins,.... and Beckett holds steady at 20 wins,.... then Boston could have the best 1-2 tandem in the AL East. That's usually good enough to win it. And Lester seems to be living up to his originally cited potential,..... Injuries will be the only problem for this rotation, and you can never know about those, eh? And I've said this enough that I'm sure some of you are getting tired of it,..... but Boston's offense is going to be significantly improved,... enough that the rotation will get a few extra wins. Example: Matsuzaka was 15-12 last season,... but should have been 17-10,... losing a couple of 1-run heartbreakers through no fault of his own. The rotation will also benefit from pitching with a lead more often than not,.... because Ellsbury, Pedroia and Youk are going to set the 1st-inning table for Papi and Manny,.... the Sox will score more 1st-inning runs than any other team in baseball. Pitchers like that.

April 4, 2008  12:38 PM ET

If it is true that there is no movment on his pitches and he is not a regular replacement in the rotation...then maybe some fiber will help out Colon.
