France goalkeeper Gregory Coupet could leave Lyon for America at the end of the season, according to the player's agent. Coupet revealed last May that he was considering his options and spoke about possibly moving to New York to play in Major League Soccer. Coupet said last year: "I have even thought of going to play in New York, to live an adventure. There is the American dream and the chance for my children to learn the language. Within my sporting plans, there are family plans."

Only if Lyon can get a top-notch GK to replace him or a youngster with potential. Id say Coupet has another 2-3 years in him. Would be good for any MLS team but I dont see the point. GK isnt necessarily a big drawing position for the game...

Red Bulls aren't trying to win a popularity contest. They want to win. In NYC area, they need to in order to draw fans, regardless of how many big names they have. Coupet helps them win. I agree that Lyon will not let him go though. They do not have any decent capable of replacing him.

Lyon will let Coupet go.
They do have a plan B if he leaves. Hugo Lloris from Nice, will probably follow Coupet's footsteps in Lyon.
And in a way, it's the best solution. Coupet will leave the club at his peak, with a seventh championship in a row. He won't leave for another french club, and Lyon will get Lloris who'll probably be France's number one goalie in the years to come.
it's a win-win situation.

Jon Conway should enjoy being a starter until Maybe Coupet comes in. But he should i mean he played for france in the 2006 World cup and also help Lyon to 6 stright french cup so far.

I heard a couple of days ago that Coupet wanted to leave Lyon, but I think him seriously considering coming to MLS is more rumor than truth. However, it's good that he would even mention MLS as a possible next destination.

These European players need to stop with all the New York and LA talk. They obviously don't know what a salary cap is. They just want to go to the cities they know but the cap it's not even close to being that easy here.

April 4, 2008  03:37 PM ET

"...but WITH the cap it's not even....."

April 4, 2008  04:08 PM ET

Now this is something that will happen. This is what the MLS is, older Europeans who target this league because they feel that it's not as competitive as their league.

Coupet will be a Red Bull.

April 4, 2008  04:31 PM ET

C'mon Hova, that's not really the case anymore with the influx of talent from all around latin american in the league now. I feel you though. I get the feeling that what we may wind up with is big-name (older) Europeans that may fill the seats and build the interest, but the American and Latino players will always be the true soul of MLS.

April 4, 2008  05:42 PM ET

The big difference though, is that the Europeans intrigued with the MLS right now, are proven veterans who have a lot of experience.

This is a major difference, because they can bring a lot to the table. There's a real shift of trends in Europe right now. Two or three years ago, European top veterans thought of Qatar or Saudi Arabia for a nice last contract.

Now a lot of them consider seriously the MLS, because even with a lesser salary, there's a real sports project behind each team, which is not the case in Qatar for example, where the level is appalling. That's why I'm confident for the MLS over the next decade...

Wow, that would be a steal for RBNY if they can afford him. I understand how NY and LA are "the" destinations for europeans, but they got to realize that there is more to the US than those two cities. Sure you don't want to end up in Salt Lake or KC (don't kill me if you live there), but Colorado, Seattle, SJ, DC, Chicago, etc are still cool destinations.

Vercourte is already lined up as his replacement.

Wasn't there just a rumor he was gonna go to England? Moving to the US and playing for the red bulls would be sick for us, but he needs another star to come with im i believe because goalies dont make much splash.

(JUNINHO ANYONE?)

Well if Bayern is on the board then I don't see much of a reason for Coupet to go to NYRB. Better money and a better team in Germany.

Juninho to the MLS? Your livin in a dream world, jeevs. That would be incredible.

If you build it... they will come...

April 5, 2008  08:03 AM ET

Chicago should go for him since I don't trust Busch to stay healthy and we only have 1 backup who's like 12 years old.

@Keeper: I would be shocked if he ended up at Bayern as anything more than a backup. Rensing has been awesome when he's been in and was all but guaranteed the #1 shirt next year when he was looking to walk at the beginning of this year. In fact, most expected Kahn to play 1 or 2 more years but believe he was asked to step aside to make room for Rensing. That's saying something as Kahn is still one of the best in the business.

April 5, 2008  10:07 AM ET

Don't see this happening. Coach Osorio is looking to fill the roster with game changing field players. A left winger, a left back and an attacking mid would have alot more impact and add alot more value than Coupet. That's not a knock on the French keeper at all (he's proven himself for years at a high level) but rather a compliment to current Red Bulls stopper Jon Conway.

@jeevs BS
Vercoutrewill be let go at the end of the season.
His contract is over and it won't be picked up. Lloris is rumoured to be the likely replacement of Coupet...

April 5, 2008  11:06 AM ET

RBNY's goalkeepers are always cursed. They've never had a good one and typically they're plagued with injuries. Any keeper going to New York is doomed to fail...

That said, isn't it about time for someone to break the trend?

(I hope you just now didn't notice I'm a DC United fan)
