Injury tough on Hampton emotionally too

Braves pitcher Mike Hampton didn't need to listen to sports-talk radio to feel lousy Friday. Backing out at the last minute from his start Thursday with another injury was more than sufficient for that. "It hurts," said Hampton, speaking Friday of emotions, not of the strained pectoral muscle that put him back on the disabled list.

looks like Carlos Lee to me

agreed

This is worse than the time he broke his eyebrow and was sidelined for 2 months.

No one feels worse than Hampton about his most recent problems. He is a man with pride and integrity and knows people think he is "dogging" it. He really wants to pitch for the Braves and prove to them and the fans that the Braves didn't make a mistake by signing him. I think Bobby Cox and the new mangagment team will give him the chance to prove he can still pitch and be effective...what do they have to lose? He will be paid anyway.

Corner..I hope you are being sarcastic...

Do you really think the Mike Hampton feels that bad? This guy is getting paid $15MM and hasn't pitched in 3 years. If he really has pride and integtity then he should renegotiate his contract to get paid much less. I'm sorry, but he doesn't strike me as a guy with a lot of pride or integrity.

Yeah, the money has to ease some of that pain.

Life is definitely tough when you've got to go home to your 15 million dollar estate in a gated community. The kobe beef and Dom P. doesn't taste quite as good.

"Here I sit broken hearted, I'm on the D.L., and I only farted" !!!

April 5, 2008  02:06 PM ET

No, I am not being sarcastic. I know Hampton personally and stand by my remarks. He hasn't been sitting getting fat and living it up during his recovery. He is probably in better shape than most players currently playing...due to hard work not chance. Most people don't know, but teams have insurance that helps them recoup money that they are required to pay injured players so even they haven't suggested Hampton restructure or renegotiate his contract. They still have hopes, rightfully so I think, that he will be able to return and be productive for them. Mike has been through an unusual amount of injuries, true, but he desperately wants to play and show people like you that you are wrong about him. I hope he gets the chance.

It's amuses me that SI posts a picture of Carlos Lee for a Mike Hampton story.

This is really a hack venture.

I have to agree with Corner ..... Hampton would rather be pitching than sitting

April 5, 2008  03:29 PM ET

I don't think Hampton is soft, just fragile. But there does come a point when one has to wonder if the constant "injuries" are psychosomatic. Is Hampton so afraid that he could never live up to such a contract, so if he's injured, it's that much easier for him to deal with between his ears. Not soft, just fragile.

Hampton has stuck with his rehabs, so it's obvious that he doesn't want to just collect his money and go home. Give the guy a break. We're all just jealous that he makes that much money, but he's trying to contribute.

April 5, 2008  05:14 PM ET

That's definitely not Mike Hampton.

April 5, 2008  06:08 PM ET

Under my administration players would be eligible for the DL for having hurt feelings!

April 5, 2008  07:06 PM ET

See what happens when your injured all the time. You warf into another player.

April 5, 2008  07:39 PM ET

No wonder he's on the DL... Getting huge plastic surgery to look like Carlos Lee has to have taken a toll on the guy.
