Sheffield's injury not as severe as it looks

Despite tearing a tendon in his finger, Gary Sheffield hopes to be able to play as soon as the swelling subsides. He doesn't know when that will be, but at this point, it doesn't look to be a long-term absence. Manager Jim Leyland said he doesn't think Sheffield will have to go on the disabled list. To replace him as the Tigers' designated hitter, Leyland went with Miguel Cabrera, who missed Thursday's sweep-completing loss to the Royals because of soreness in his left quad.

At least it wasn't the finger he used to wave good bye to Joe Torre..

To continue the ironic start of the season, I bet Willis pitches 7 innings of shutout ball today, while Inge and Clete Thomas continue to lead detroit bats...hopefully, en route to the first win...

Looks like his new book will be delayed.

Its the white mans fault that Sheffield is hurt, duh.

Spoken like a true ignorant white man.

April 5, 2008  12:22 PM ET

How is that ignorant??

April 5, 2008  12:25 PM ET

Why is it that this guy gets to say whatever he wants, with no backlash. I liked him until he spoke in an offensive manner. he insults white people all of the time. So I think the "ignorant" shoe should be put on your foot. Oh wait its cool to rip on white people ...

Sheff is great until he opens his mouth, then he is funny.

I definitely side with Norcal here. Norcal was just echoing Sheffield's sentiments. No harm, no foul.

Why did my comment get dinged as offensive?? who does that??

April 5, 2008  01:06 PM ET

I wonder who Sheffield will blame for his torn tendon ???

Sheffield has gone on record saying that this current injury was the result of "white men"?

If so, I take my comment back, otherwise Norcal was needlessly entering race into a conversation where it has no right even being mentioned. Maybe what Sheffield says is not well thought out sometimes, however its not fair to project a "white hater" image onto him... He speaks up when he sees injustices, if the fact that racial injustices still exist and thus should be considered bothers someone, that is their problem.

Norcal, if your comment was offensive, it would be taken down. Seemingly just proves the stereotypes of the intelligence surfers..

I heard while watching the Tigers yesterday that he could play as soon as Sunday night.

April 5, 2008  03:18 PM ET

Say what you want about the guy, you can't be stopped. But you're in denial if you do not at least admit he's a warrior when it's game time and plays through pain like few others in baseball. I happen to have zero problems with the guy and have almost always agreed with his opinions and statements.

Yes Sheffield is a warrior. The intelligence of surfers......where does that come from. Was it to say all surfers are dumb???? Because if so I will repeat you get the ignorant shoe. So if he offends me with his "injustice" statements, that is OK, but if someone fires back at him, it is not. That makes a lot of sense, dude. Everyone is a victim of injustices, not just certain races. It is part of life. I am all for speaking up for yourself, but as you even wrote you need to choose your words carefully and not paint all people with the same brush. The entire thing on race or whatever is a two way street. I think Sheffield is a very smart dude, but some of his comments about white people make it seem like he is talking about of his bottom.

NORCALSURFER777 | 04/05/08, 04:53 PM

I agree. That entire sentence was a train wreck. Can anyone around translate?

Dude, could you like parse that statement into normal English, Dude.

NorCal, Give it up. You can make fun of Shef many many many ways (see any of the other posts which do it) without turning it into a issue of race...

NorCal - So if he offends me with his "injustice" statements, that is OK, but if someone fires back at him, it is not. ..

How did Sheffield offend you with his comments? He has never said anything about ALL white people. He has had issues with very specific people and institutions... Unless you are Joe Torre (in which case you should be SoCal...) I really don't understand how you could have been offended...

My point is Shef has never never made racist comments, like you keep implying. He has used issues of racism an attempt to point out what he though was an injustice, but never made racist statements like you imply...

Unless you have experienced what it's like to be a victim of systematic racism, I just think it is insensitive and possibly ignorant to make fun of it. If you have experienced it, I feel for you, and also doubt you would find it something to joke about...
