FSU football analyst fired for criticisms

Peter Tom Willis' intent was to call it like he saw it as the analyst for Florida State football. And when the program slips to consecutive 7-6 seasons, that means saying things people don't want to hear. Those opinions got Willis fired Thursday after sharing the radio booth with play-by-play announcer Gene Deckerhoff for 10 seasons.

This is a shame. PTW was an asset to the FSU program as a player and as an analyst. He got fired for saying what every true Noles fan already knows - our program HAS slipped, and we need to get tougher mentally and physically to get back to our rightful place as one of the very best teams in the nation. Good luck PTW.

Oh yeah... That makes alot of sense... An alumnus... Who is looking out for the benefit of your program... Gives you critcism... And you fire him... Enjoy another few years in the middle FSU... You deserve it

April 5, 2008  12:53 PM ET

Hey what's the problem? FSU hired him to say what they wanted him to say. So he tells the truth and gets fired. Gotta make FSU feel pretty good about themselves.

Sounds like dealing with Government, they don't like what you have to say, you are muzzled and given the boot! Truth will set you free? In this case it just gets you fired, and fast!

April 5, 2008  01:09 PM ET

I guess he was keeping the offense from scoring...

April 5, 2008  02:15 PM ET

the coaches and the players fail to perform, and so they fire the analyst who was forced to watch and try to find good things to say ... a great move, FSU ...

April 5, 2008  02:55 PM ET

PTW was never negative to the school, he was honest. Wouldn't someone want to hear the truth from a loved one over someone who has no idea what is going on? He is that loved one.

April 5, 2008  02:59 PM ET

I am not an FSU fan, but I saw them play a little this year.

What I saw I think PTW could have run the offense better now than the QB's they had this season.

I agree this isn't a good move for FSU.

April 5, 2008  03:24 PM ET

Wow, that reminds me of our current federal government. Are Bush and Cheney consultants to the network?

April 5, 2008  04:04 PM ET

I guess that they felt he "crossed the line"...something FSU's offense hasn't been able to do in years.

nice sample to be set by an institution of alleged higher learning

April 5, 2008  05:03 PM ET

being fired for being honest? wow, that's sad

April 5, 2008  06:18 PM ET

Lake Michigan still stinks from the way he played with the Bears!

Besides, Peter is a funny name and anytime you use all three names together, it usually means there's a dead prostitute somewhere out there!

April 5, 2008  09:21 PM ET

Ridiculous! Peter Tom called it like it was (and it was garbage)...Are they going to make me turn in my memorabilia because I think they have slipped too!

April 6, 2008  01:11 AM ET

This is outrageous!!! P.T. deserves better than this. Getting fired for telling the truth is crazy. Email me a seminolessavept@aol.com to sign a petition to get him his job back. Go Noles!

April 6, 2008  01:37 AM ET

Wow, he gets fired for commenting on a 7-6 season, now how about firing the guy that brought the 7-6 season to be fair....

April 6, 2008  01:42 AM ET

What a joke! What a joke!

April 6, 2008  03:05 PM ET

I wouldn't expect anything else from a team of over confident cheating pricks!!

April 6, 2008  09:02 PM ET

Hell, I'm a Miami fan and as much as I love to hate FSU, even I have to say that's ridiculous that they fire a guy for telling the truth. Really makes FSU come off as very full of themselves. Hopefully both FSU and Miami will improve so they can be the top teams that they used to be and make the rivalry fun again instead of thes stinkers they've been playing the past 3-4 years. Go Miami!!!

I've been an FSU fan for over 15 years, through scandals, losses, and wide rights. I think it is disgusting that they would fire someone for telling the truth, but work so hard to cover up player and academic scandals. Gene and PT broadcasting together was the only thing that got me through the losses. PT has always been so honest, so enthusiastic about the games and the FSU program as a whole. If PT is gone, then so am I.
