Giants looking for help at first
General manager Brian Sabean acknowledged on his weekly radio show that he is looking for a first baseman, preferably a left-handed hitter. The Giants have had internal discussions about Washington's Nick Johnson, but he might be off the market after winning the everyday first-base job and starting the season strongly. A source said the Giants scouted 26-year-old Braves first baseman Scott Thorman, who hit 11 home runs in 287 at-bats last season.

The article title should say, "Giants looking for help at all positions."

Giants need a big hitter under 60.

They certainly don't need a big hitter under indictment.

There should be a Bruce Bochy defection watch this week when San Diego comes to town. At this point, Bochy may rather sell peanuts at his old team's stadium than be a manager of this club.

I haven't been keeping up, but it seems that the Giants have Zito, Lincecum, 3 old position players and 20 guys I never heard of.

From a laypersons point of view, you pretty much have it nailed Fuzzy. Give or take an old guy or three.

I hate to say this but bringing Bonds back for one more season would not mean the end of the world. He could Pinch Hit like a DH only have to play when called in for minor duty.
All this talk about him going to another team to DH is nuts. Why do that when we have interleague play anyway? Keep him as a PH and use him as a DH in AL digs.
As far as first base goes Sabes didn't have to come out and say anything about searching for a corner man. We need at least 3 position in the infield alone. O_O

Bonds at 1st for the Giants actually makes some sense -- they could certainly use his bat/walks in the lineup -- but are they prepared to restore all the Bonds paraphernalia and sign-age they just spents big bucks removing?

Using Zito's contract as a basis for pay vs. quality....I can easily earn league minimum for 3 years by batting .030 with 40+ errors.
My god the Giants are so bad. It reminds me of the move Major League...without the happy ending.

<<< My god the Giants are so bad. It reminds me of the move Major League...without the happy ending. >>>
And it's unlikely to get better for the foreseeable future. Sure, they have some young arms who can mature into possibly great pitchers, but they haven't been able to develop position players since Matt Williams/Robby Thompson. That was what? In 1986? We're talking over 20 years without developing a legitimate position player.
This is a problem the Giants can't buy themselves out of. They have that mortgage payment on the park that limits their ability to land big free agents. Zito's contract is a perfect example of them having to overpay to get people to sign with them. They've been rumored to be interested in every big name free agent for the last 3 years, only to have been outbid each time.
The only one they didn't get outbid on was Barry Zito. *sigh*
