Phils trads Helms to Marlins for cash

Posted: Sunday April 06, 2008 09:44AM ET

The Wes Helms era in Philadelphia is over. Helms, a high-priced free-agent addition to the Phillies before last season, was traded to the Florida Marlins for cash considerations late Saturday night, three days after being designated for assignment. The deal likely means the Phillies are no longer responsible for all of the $2.9 million remaining on Helms' contract.

there was a Wes Helms era in Philly?

Report Offensive Comment

I just realized that Wes looks so much like Kurt Russell. Plays like him too. Then again I don't know how well he can play ball. I'd bet he isn't too good.

Helms era? Whoa.

Report Offensive Comment

kurt russell was a minor league prospect for someone i dont remember who , but he screwed up his arm and went to acting , helms is probably as good lol

Report Offensive Comment

Wow. I never knew that, seeing as Kurt never played a baseball player before. Or maybe he did...did he?

The legendary Wes Helms era in Philly lasted as long as the Peanuts Lowrey era in Philly. Let this be written in the annals of history.

Russell also had a baseball career (his father also having been a baseball player). In the early 1970s, Russell played second base for the California Angels (now the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim) Double-A minor league affiliate the El Paso Sun Kings. During a play, he was hit in the shoulder by a player running to second base; the collision tore the rotator cuff in Russell's right/throwing shoulder. Before his injury he was leading the Texas League in hitting with a .563 batting average but the injury forced his retirement from baseball in 1973 and led to his return to acting.

If it's true, then we now know who's the better player...lol

I'd be happy even if it was for Dave Cash.

$2.9 Million Contract??? How is that a high contract? The Brewer's sausages are more high profile than this guy was. Who wrote this?

Report Offensive Comment

"trads"? I don't know this word.

Spell Check!

But I'll bet Wes Helms didn't marry someone like Goldie Hawn. And, yes, Kurt Russell WAS a ball player, a minor leaguer. He didn't go into acting after baseball, he was in acting as a kid B4 he tried his hand at baseball. I think he was a Reds farmhand.
