Donnie Walsh and Isiah Thomas still have to meet, but that's merely a formality. Soon enough, Thomas will be dismissed as Walsh will be naming a new coach. And that new staff could very well include Patrick Ewing.

Ewing's not head coaching material, is he?

I doubt it but he has helped some of the best big men such as Yao Ming. His best shot is becoming the assistant coach which I think would be the perfect place for him. New York needs to start fresh and I think having a guy like him will bring some hope for the teams future.

Ewing is a good asst. coach. He did a good job on Yao and he's making D. Howard better as well right now. Maybe he could reach Curry and get him into better shape.

April 6, 2008  12:20 PM ET

I would not put a lot into Curry; but Ewing may make a good coach. With Walsh handling the talent it could work. Look at Boston; Doc Rivers would have been fired 20 games intot he season if Garnett & Allen were nt brought into the mix. Of course Boston was still a better thna team than the Knicks before Garnet & Allen.

Ewing could possibly be a good coach after gaining some experience. This is not the time or the place to start a training program. The Knicks need an experienced coach. How many mistakes do they need to make before someone gets a clue?

April 6, 2008  02:56 PM ET

I am a big time Knicks fan and Patrick Ewing was my favorite Knick, but I still don't like this job as his first. Be patient pat you will get your turn but this job isn't it.

April 6, 2008  04:46 PM ET

Maybe he could help them out with some of there motivational issues, Pat back in New York will be a great change for them.

April 6, 2008  05:25 PM ET

ha! Coaching material?? Even a brick is a better 'material' to coach than the thug they currently got!!

April 6, 2008  05:40 PM ET

Seeing Patrick Ewing come back to NY, even as an assistant would be like Jesus coming back on the third day. Pat's an icon to the city and the team. Just having him around will inspipre players and put some pride back in the team. Not to mention, he could help the big men, should they acquire one in the draft.

April 6, 2008  06:27 PM ET

Says nothing about Ewing coming to NY to be the head coach.

"And that new staff could very well include Patrick Ewing."

mark jackson, patrick ewing, allan houston. new coaching staff..

You guys hit the nail on the head. Patrick Ewing would definitely be a strong asset to the coaching staff. However, with all the spotlights on New York, Ewing is not yet ready for the head coaching position. He has shown that he can tutor other big men, and an assistant coaching position would be a good fit for him.
Other former centers - Bill Laimbeer, Kurt Rambis, and Kareem A-Jabbar, have all had success coaching other centers and playing the role of assistant coach (although Laimbeer was a head coach in the WNBA, which, I guess, is equivalent in terms of pressure to an Assistant in the NBA).
So who should coach NY? Preferably an experienced head coach, but not someone who is a big name. The Knicks players are headstrong, and big-name coaches have had trouble imposing their will (ie Lenny Wilkens, Larry Brown, and Nelson). However, Van-Gundy types have thrived.

Patrick Ewing would be a terrific addition to the Knicks coaching staff. He's an ideal guy to work with big men and help refine their games. Ewing, is after all, one of the top 8 Centers to have ever played the game. If Walsh can bring in a coach that can work well with Pat, and reach the players on a different level than Isiah.. since Thomas was under immense pressure by the media and fans and in turn he probably took it out on the players in practice and what not.Ewing as an assistant working withe the bigs and someone like maybe even a Mark Jackson, whose name has been linked to the job, a former Ewing teammate might be a nice 1-2 punch.

April 6, 2008  07:35 PM ET

I just read an earlier poster mention a Jackson/Ewing/Houston 1-2-3 punch as the new staff for nY, and you know what? I like it, I like it a lot. As long as there's no long term commitments, something along the lines of 2, maybe 3 yr deals max, I think it works perfect. Think, Ewing works with the bigs, Houston was one of the best pure shooters in the game during his tenure and isn't far enough removed from the game to still relate to today's players and Jackson a former PG who really understands the game and the nuances that come along with it. Van Gundy and Jackson are the best 1-2 announce team in sports today. Nobody compliments the other as well as those 2 do. I'm all for this, Donnie Walsh should make it happen.

April 7, 2008  07:44 AM ET

Ewing is getting some coaching experience now by assisting on the Rockets with Yao, I think it would be a good choice. Besides, NY is home to Patrick and I think he'd welcome a chance to come back home - he should have never been traded in the first place-:)-:) NY needs Ewing again and Walsh really should consider it.

April 7, 2008  09:19 AM ET

Stop with the nostalgia......
- I have no problem with Ewing as an assistant, helping out with the big (fat) men, but we need an experienced head coach that can teach this disgusting roster how to play team basketball over 2-3 years.
We can't afford to have a young/inexperienced 'players coach' who would 'relate' & be buddy, buddy with these bums to develop with them. We need a defensive philosophy NOW
